Gr 3-6-Both of these beautifully illustrated volumes celebrate the culture of the Mexican people. The first book outlines the elements and historic origins of celebration in music, costumes, and dance, and looks at some particular festivals and traditions including carnaval, los voladores, folk plays, and Cinco de Mayo. Ancona's photography reflects the exuberance of the participants, although some facial expressions are lost in the shadows. The book compares favorably with the Mexico volume in Fiesta! (Grolier, 1997), which also includes folktales and songs. Folk Arts, in particular, presents stunning images of the country's extraordinary variation in art and design. The clear photographs highlight the colorful palettes and textures found in works of metal, fabric, clay, straw, beads, and paper, while close-up shots reveal the details. Both books contain a wealth of information for reports and offer a feast for the eyes.-Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
