Publishers Weekly - Publishers Weekly
Originally published in 1969, The Fourteen Bears Summer and Winter by Evelyn Scott, illus. by Virginia Parsons, describes the togetherness of this rather large ursine clan as they plunge into the swimming hole in the summer months, and hunker down for a hibernation cut short by Little Theodore-who prompts the family to ice skate, ski and make a snowbear before settling back down until spring. Children's Literature
The fourteen bears live a delightful life. In the summer, they swim, lie in the sun and eat honey treats. In the winter, they find their honey treats are frozen, but they learn to skate, sled and trim their trees. The bears have a set-up that many children would love: a tree house of one's own, right next to the whole family. One bear has a castle motif in her tree, another has Chinese screens, and another has fancy, fluffy chairs. While there is a limited plot, the endearing illustrations and fun activities of the large family will interest the younger set of pre-readers. Originally written and illustrated in 1969 and 1973, this is a re-issue of two Golden Books: Fourteen bears in Summer and Fourteen Bears in Winter. This picture book may have nostalgic value for the parents and grandparents, as well as entertain the children. 2005 (orig. 1969 and 1973), A Golden Book/Random House, Ages 4 to 8.

When I was a child in the 70's I read this book over and over and over. It is a cute story about a family of bears living in their adorable little tree community and how they spend their winter and their summer. Very cute and nothing objectionable. Appropriate for children ages one to nine I would say.

This was one of my favorite books as a kid in the late 70's. It made you wish you could live with the 14 bears in one of their tree houses. I have no idea what happened to my copy, but now here it is for my kids to enjoy!

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to have found this book! This was my favorite book as a little girl and I still have the copy, but the cover was ripped off so I haven't known the title. I have searched and asked people for years, telling them of all the bears and their great houses, to the beehive ice cream, but to no avail and here it is!!! YEAH!!! Now, if anyone knows the bear story where a little boy and girl eat pancakes with some bears I will be in seventh heaven!

I was absolutely thrilled to stumble upon this while browsing online! This is the only book I have from my childhoon (over 30 years ago) and it's on the high shelf, so my kids don't touch it. We take it out to read on special occassions, because my copy is in great condition. I was so sad that they could not read it nightly like I did. Now I'm buying a copy for my children so they will be able to fall in love with the 14 bears and all their great homes like I did as a little girl. Thank you for reprinting it!!!!

Several years ago I tried to find this book for my friend's grandchildren. It was my daughter's favorite book and I have such fond memories of reading it with her. Now she is expecting a child, my first grandchild. How surprised my daughter will be to receive this special gift.

This book is a golden treasure of my family. My three sisters and I wore this book out 25 years ago! It is a great story and has wonderfull illustrations. We were so excited when it came back out that we all bought several copies for our children. It is a must have for any child's library
