Overview

The Galactic Mage by John Daulton

They told him space travel was impossible. They told him the greatest wizards who ever tried it died. He's going to do it anyway.

Altin Meade is a sorcerer running from a curse, the curse of Six: He's got too much magic to control, yet not enough to save himself. No Six in his planet's history has lived beyond the age of twenty-five. Altin is twenty-two. Determined to escape that fate, Altin seeks to leave his home world and remake his destiny amongst the stars. But first he has to invent a way to get there-a process that might bring about the very doom he's trying to avoid.

Far across the galaxy, there is nothing Ensign Orli Pewter hates more than life amongst the stars. Brought aboard as a child, she has spent the last ten years on the spaceship Aspect, a life she never asked for, a life of misery. Bright, strong and beautiful, Orli is now an officer in the fleet from Earth, serving a role and a mission she did not choose. As the lumbering Earth ships hunt a mysterious race of genocidal aliens across the enormity of the galaxy, years are ticking off her life, her very sanity at stake. She's got to get away. She's got to get off that ship. But there is nowhere for her to go.

Or is there?

It has been a long time that I have read a book that takes me away so much that during my workday, I find myself wondering what the characters are doing at the moment. I have been talking about this book to everyone I know and even some I don't!! Enjoy!

Phenomenal book! The series is a great read for anyone looking for a cross between Dungeons and Dragons and Battlestar Galactica with a little War of the Worlds sprinkled in or simply into sci-fan.

Two world views one of science and technology the other of science and magic. Both using what they know and can figure out to solve a common problem. All with a bit of romance thrown in. I loved it all.

I liked the story. It was predictable but fun. What i didn't like was the occasional swearing, but that was to be somewhat expected due to the military background of half the story.

This was an exceptional read. Absolutely loved it from front to back. Occasionally wanted to slap Altin around a bit, but that might have been the point. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Had I encountered this book at tweleve years of age I'd have been hooked. It is the perfect merge of science fiction and fantasy, as if the mages of your favorite D&D adventure got together and created their own version of NASA. Imaginative, "The Galactic Mage" does a great job imagining how magic could solve problems like the vacuum of space and shields. Even better, the "hostiles" in the book are brilliantly constructed and envisioned. Where the narrative falls apart is in the very two dimensional characters. Even Altin and Orli, the two main characyers are bi-polar vacilating between depression and manic action. The romance between the two makes no sense and can only compare to the Lucas wrought disaster of Anakin and Padme's courtship in Star Ears. Is the book worth reading? Yep. But don't expect much depth.

Got this book because the facebook page said if you liked final fantasy you would like this. Didnt seem in any way whatsoever related to anything final fantasy other than its a fantasy story. Should have said if you like fantasy/sci fi then you will like this. Good read overall, nice story and interesting ideas, i would recommend it if your looking for a good read
