As a parent of a daughter with Asperger's I appreciate MJ Michael sharing this love story about 2 "developmentally disabled" people who overcame many challenges to share a life together. DrMIke1953

MJ Michael has written a book that should be read by anyone who has a mentally challenged loved one and those who do not! Having been raised in a home with a mentally challenged sister, I was amazed at the similarities between my sister and Ruthie. This book was written with a lot of love and respect. Bravo MJ for sharing a part of life that not many are willing to share. It is an insightful, delightful and emotional piece. I laughed, I cried and I remembered! Thank you, Ms. Michael.

A heart warming story about love and triumph. I'm glad I read it. It opened my eyes that just because someone isn't up to par with the rest of society doesn't mean that they can't be part of it. Every person has something to contribute in their own way.

As parents of a daughter, Sandy, developmentally disabled, we read with interest the story of Ruthie and the gentle giant. We wept when we read the accounts of her life. We understand the love, and sometimes rejection by family members and friends. When our daughter was three months of age, our doctor advised us to put her in an institution and don't tell anyone. We chose to keep her at home, love her and became a small business owner to acquire extra money. Instead of life expectancy of 16 years, Sandy lived 45 years. Ruthie was neglected and rejected by her mother. How could a mother, living a few blocks from Ruthie not visit her over 20 years. Contrast this with Lillian who got up 6 AM, 45 years, gave Sandy a daily bath, and numerous other things Sandy was unable to do. God bless Ruthie, If I ever meet her, we will give her a big hug. And may the gentle giant rest in peace, what a wonderful man, he was. I know about Apple Creek, the place where the gentle giant was confined several years for a crime he was falsely accused of.doing. His wonderful parents visited him almost daily while confined to this "hell hole". Thanks for MJ Micheals for writing this book. A must read for people enjoy supporting the "underdog". My wife and I read the book several times already.

David was my cousin but I did not realize all the things he experienced in his life. What an amazing family he was born in! My Aunt Dorothy was so patient and kind and it was evidenced by how successful her children developed in their lives. Everyone needs to read this amazing and lovingly written book.

Well written true story from the heart with passion . Historical context of Steubenville added to the characters development and behaviour. Shows the best and the worst in people in a simple story of love and perserverance.

Since I know both the Gentle Giant and Ruthie, I found the book a wonderful tribute to them. The writing was oviously a first for this author, but she hit on all aspects of life in a small town as well. Anyone who has a mentally challenged child or family member will recognize the challenges as well as the wondderful moments.
