The Gentle Knight by Ashley York

A medieval soldier returns home to find his lover died in childbirth just as his own mother had. Believing he is cursed, Peter of Normandy turns from love. When he must give escort to an Irish princess more noble than many knights, he struggles with his decision to live a solitary life. Can he take the chance that his love won't be a death sentence and possibly make them stronger?

Padraig MacNaughton's death bed decree rips his daughter from the shelter of her protective clan in Ireland. Forced to take vows at a Priory in England, Brighit finds herself in the hands of lecherous mercenaries with their own agendas. Dare she trust the Norman knight to see her safely to her new life as a nun? Even when she finds in him the fulfillment of all she's ever wanted?

Will honor and duty eclipse their one chance for happiness?

About the Author

I have wanted to be a writer since the sixth grade. My first story was a mystery and I discovered that my classmates loved it and it kept them guessing. I was a voracious reader, even at a young age, and loved the history in the novels I picked up. I was so enthralled with that history that I decided to get my MA in History. The early medieval period is my favorite, as you can tell from the novels I write.

Although my works are fiction, I often like to incorporate authentic places, events, and people to increase the reader’s enjoyment. One of the more valuable lessons I have learned as a writer is the importance of using real history with the flair of artistic license. You’ll discover a world of fiction wrapped around historical people and events! I hope you enjoy reading these stories as much as I delight in writing them.

I live in New England with my husband, two cats and a yellow Labrador named Caledonia.

*I received this ARC from Netgalley* *While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone* What a fantastic surprise this book was! The Gentle Knight by Ashley York is the second book in her Norman Conquest series but read completely as a stand alone while maintaining its connection to the first book in the series, The Saxon Bride. Superbly written with well-developed characters I could not put this book down. A wonderful hero, lovely heroine and wretchedly awful villains kept me on the edge of my seat till the very end. Looking forward to what this very talented author has in store next for her readers!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. 'The Gentle Knight' by Ashley York is book two in the "The Norman Conquest" series. This is the story of Brighit MacNaughton and Peter of Normandy. I really have enjoyed Ms. York's writing and can't wait to read more of her books. Brighit's father is dying and he has decided to send her to a church to become a Nun. Reason are that her father thought that is what her mom would have wanted and I don't think he wanted her to end up in the enemies hands as a wife. Brighit is upset to leave home but comes along with her father wishes. Brighit's Uncle is suppose to take her to the church which is a distance away. Brighit doesn't really know her Uncle and really none of her family does. Not to long after they start out her Uncle sends her with three other men who are no relations and are new people to her. Brighits Uncle just leaves her with them. Brighit starts to realize that this won't be a easy trip with the new men. But then comes Peter who may be able to help her but Brighit is slow to trust anyone now. Peter knows after meeting Brighit and the three men that she is with things are not what they seem. So Peter takes the stand that he will go with them so insure they have 'safe travels' to the church where Brighit is to become a nun at. Peter has been having some issue himself when he arrives to late to save his mistress and she dies in childbirth. Guilt has been bothering him for not being there in time. Can Peter get Brighit there safely? Will Peter and Brighit go there separate ways as they both plan too? I was enthralled from the beginning. I could not put this book down even if I tried. This poor young lady is whisked away, by her uncle, at her father’s dying wish, to a Priory. Since he could not secure a betrothal he had decided to send to nun. She was being escorted to the priory when along the way she was being mistreated by her so called protectors (Men her uncle hired) Along came Sir Peter, but could she trust this man? Was he like the rest, rude and continually lurking at her? The story is great, plot thick, and the characters feel alive. I wanted so badly to be in this book. I felt every character had a story. You knew them and either liked or disliked them. There was action, mystery, lies, and betrayal. You cannot go wrong with this book. I cannot wait for the next book to come out. Knowing these last two books, I can only imagine what fun and adventure Ashley York will take me on.

As someone who reads constantly, I am always thrilled when I find authors whose writing is amazing. Ashley has an incredible gift and is very talented. I have each one of her books, including her new one, "The Gentle Knight" in one day and could not put them down. I felt like I was a part of the book and could feel the emotions of each character. As in her first two books and this new one, her love scenes are sensual, romantic and written with pure joy and love. I just adored these books and can say that Ashley is one of the best historical romance writers I have had the pleasure of reading. I so look forward to reading more of her books - they make reading fun and enjoyable.

I loved this book! I started reading this book and I just couldn’t put it down. A fast paced story that is filled with danger, passion, intrigue and love. Brighit MacNaughton’s father, Padraig, is on his deathbed and wishes Brighit to be a nun for her safety and denies her the chance at marriage and children.. She is disappointed, but does the honorable thing and accepts her fate like an obedient daughter. Her brother Tadhg saddened by this news and has their Uncle Ronan take Brighit for her protection and virtue. Peter of Normandy is a great warrior, a Kings man. He harbors his own grief and guilt over the death of his mistress. He is sent on a mission to England to forget his troubles; this is where the story starts to get good. On his way he meets the Irish beauty Brighit, where he sees that she is being abused by her protector. Ivan. Ivan was hired by her uncle and has his own agenda for Brighit. Join Brighit and Peter in their adventure, somewhere along the way they fall in love. I strongly recommend it! Looking forward to reading the next book!

Another spectacular read by Ashley York in  The Gentle Knight  (The Norman Conquest series, book 2. I totally devoured this book. It has so many twists and turns and at times a major heart string puller so have your Kleenex nearby. It's a major page turner that is superbly written you don't want let this exceptional book pass you by as it is both fascinating and captivating. It is the story of Brighit MacNaughton of Ireland whose father Padraig is on his deathbed and wishes Brighit to be a nun. This is shocking news to Brighit as she had been in betrothed contracts in the past and dreamed of a husband and children and living near her family. A bit disappointing but was the ever obedient daughter and would become a bride of Christ going to England to live in Priory behind convent walls forever.   Her brother Tadhg saddened by the loss of his favorite sister has their Uncle Ronan take Brighit for her protection and virtue. Since Tadhg will be stepping in her fathers place and become leader on their clan once their father passes on to his next life.  Peter of Normandy is a great warrior the Kings man devastated and guilt ridden over the death of his mistress one of the queens ladies. He is send him on a mission to England to forget his troubles where he meets the Irish beauty Brighit whom seems to be abused by her protector. Ivan ,hired by a neglectful Uncle who was supposed to be taking her to the the priory convent himself, but dumps her in evil cruel mean spirited man's hands who threaten her life!  Peter can see right through this short pudgie coward whom seem to enjoyment threatening women and abusing animals. Against everything this brave warrior is taught and soon is under his complete protection the problem is he lusts after her greatly. The problem with lust it turns into love? Plus the fact Brighit doesn't really want to be a nun and take her vows, yet she is ever the obedient sister and daughter. Of course she wants what every young girl wants to be a wife and mother something that scares Peter to death! As he lost both his own mother and former mistress in childbirth!  Will Peter be able to forget about Jeanette's ghost and will Brighit become the bride of Christ? You will have to read this fantastic book and find out I highly recommend The Gentle Knight and recommend Ashley's previous books the Bruise Thistle and The Saxon Bride (Norman Conquest series, book 1)
