Overview

from a New York Times Bestseller...

I have three months to write the last book of my life. Three months to confess the details of that day, and how it changed everything for me.

My name is Helena Ross. I’ve written fifteen romance novels, ten of which have become international bestsellers. But this one isn't a romance. This novel holds only the truth, which I have run away from for four years. The truth, which I have hidden from the police, from my family, from the world.

This final book?

It's my confession.

It was an OK read bur nothing spectacular. The first two thirds of the book dragged on, just to rush through the most exciting parts in the last few chapters. Character development was weak and paled in comparison to other books by this author. Pity because the story had potential.

Intensely Moving! The Ghostwriter opens with the primary narrator proclaiming that she is a murderess and that she has three months to live. Most of us would assume we’ve got the story figured out from the start, but in Torre-esque style, that is just the tip of the iceberg. The Ghostwriter is not a romance, per se. However, this incredibly suspenseful contemporary fiction is a story of love. It tells the tale of love between newlyweds, between parent and child, and the sort of love that comes from years of acquaintance. That said, The Ghostwriter is not a sunny-field-of-flowers sort of read. I was pensive, distraught, angry, sentimental, and sad while reading this book. It has been quite some time since my eyes teared-up over a book; The Ghostwriter is definitely a book to keep the tissues at the ready. The layers of the richly developed characters and their relationships are exposed as Helena shares her story with her ghostwriter. High strung, creative, crazy, wildly successful are all good descriptions for the main character Helena Ross. She is OCD, a bit of a recluse, and she is much more. Helena is a complex character, and while she might not be completely likeable, you can’t help but empathize with her. I loved the intense competition between Helena and her fellow writer, Marka Vantly—the terse, barb-riddled correspondence between the two masks their individual feelings that their competitor just might be better in every way. From word one to the last I was in this story—like a specter hovering in each scene. The Ghostwriter is a gripping book that I literally didn’t put down once I started it. The story starts slowly with the introduction of characters and setting, with the tension steadily building to a crescendo like a banshee’s wail. Judging by my pounding heart, reading this book, might be equivalent to a cardio workout. Avoid reviews with spoilers—it will absolutely ruin this book for you. Grab this book, get your chores done, and start reading. The Ghostwriter by Alessandra Torre is one of my top reads for 2017.

As an avid reader, I am always on the hunt for books that will blow my mind and give me that magical feeling you get when you come across a storyline/plot that you’ve never read before. These types of books hold a special place in my heart. They will be reread. They will be suggested to friends and then later on, be demanded that they read if they don’t pick it up immediately. Those type of books that stay with you well after you are done reading it are the ones that make my personal go to list of “Best Reads”. The Ghostwriter has officially made my list. I started this book completely unaware of what I was getting into. I have read all of this author’s books and love her writing and her characters and her storylines but this book.......is like reading an author that you love but meeting them for the first time and falling in love with their stories all over again, just differently. It is like nothing I have ever read before and like nothing this author has ever written previously. I would love to spill out every detail of this book but I think I would be doing it an injustice by taking away from another reader that “magical first time” feel. Now, in my attempt to be as vague as possible, I will say that the book is about a writer who is given a certain amount of time to live. She intends to write a story about her ghosts of the past. The things that haunt her that she wants to make peace with before she dies. In order to finish her story, she has to acquire the help of a ghostwriter. A ghostwriter that doesn’t see her in the best light. As her story is told you get sucked into a world that is dark, emotional and filled with twists that keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page is turned. All I can say further is, Helena, I didn’t like you at all in the beginning but by the end......I adored you in the weirdest way possible. People are saying this is a must read of 2017..... And I couldn’t agree more! I would highly recommend this book to any and everyone who wants to walk away satisfied with their purchase. It is truly an amazing book.

Sensationally Suspenseful and Artful This was a bit different than my normal reads  but the writting is soo good that it captured me from the beginning. A story that pulls you in, keeps you guessing and has you at the edge of your seat till the very last page. I got to know the characters. I was able to understand them therefore understanding their choices, actions and decisions. Each page was a new revelation. Experiencing the process of the character writing her book, I thought that was unique and interesting. There were some parts that touched my heart making this story overall astonishing.

If I could, I would give this book 10 STARS! This is NOT a romance. It is the dying confession of a mother and wife who is also a famous romance author. The loss, the guilt, the reckoning of her soon to end life, is a burden unbearable for Helena. She wants her confession to be her final book so her soul can rest in peace. How will you judge her? I have to admit, as I read this book, I was not sure how I felt about Helena's character. I knew there had to be more to her than that harsh exterior, so, there be any redeemable qualities to her? I will let you decide for yourselves. In a marriage, when you are in love, we have a tendency to just see what we want to see. Sometimes, we end up marrying a stranger through no fault of ours. We each keep our secrets and flaws well hidden, hoping to impress our partner and not be found out. My aunt always called this the "veil" effect. Like a "veil" is covering our eyes and we see reality through its distortion. Once that "veil" falls and our eyes are free, reality can be very hard to deal with. This is our author's latest masterpiece. She is the queen of the psychological thriller as far as I am concerned. In this book, she is dealing with the psychological impact mothers pass on to their daughters, and they, in turn, pass on to their daughters, etc. Anyone who has ever felt the tugs of conscience as to whether or not they are raising their children appropriately will find this book full of deep questions that will cause a lot of introspection. How do we know we are raising our children correctly before it is too late to reverse the damage? I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I thank the author for sharing a copy with me.

Wow...this one pulled at so many emotions. I find myself still trying to reel them all in. This book was raw and totally real. No fairytale here. I found myself routing for Helena one minute and then being disgusted by her the next. I think I'm still trying to figure out if I even like her. Lol. Even though this may be the case, it definitely does not take away from how great this story was. I'm always blown away at Alessandra Torre's ability to write such dynamic characters. I think what I liked most about this book though was how it wasn't the cliche happily ever after. It was a very relatable story, flawed characters and all. Loved this book. So well written, so unique and so powerful. Really great read!

A book so gripping it takes your breath away. Give me a minute to pick my jaw off the floor. This book, just, oh my God, no words. I will tell you this book is not in her usual romance trope. It's darker, it's edgier, and it's completely compelling. It will get your blood pumping, and make your mind hurt from all the tipsy-turvy curves that are thrown your way. I don't want to give anything away, just read the blurb, so you'll have some idea of what you will be going into. Then, throw the rule book away, and enjoy the ride. It's a wild one.

Thirty-something Helena Ross has just been given three months to live. The brain tumor that will take her life is a relief to her - Helena is ready to go. Before she does, the best-selling author needs to write one last story - her own. Four years ago a major tragedy occurred in Helena's life causing her to become a virtual shut-in. Barring herself off from the rest of the world she only has limited conversations with her agent, Kate. Knowing that her time is running short, Helena tells Kate that she is going to need a ghostwriter. She decides that the only person who can do this work justice is her greatest rival Marka Vantley. Helena's final work will be unlike anything she has published before, this will be her final confession about what really happened on That Day. "The Ghostwriter" is a multi-POV with flashbacks appearing as the pages of Helena's story comes to life. Though this story is a bit slow to build readers who like a good twist will enjoy this quick read.

I ended up skimming a good portion of this book because it was so slow. And it turned out that what I skipped didn’t matter. So, I got to the crux of the story after which there was some okay reading. A whole lot of writing that felt to me like filller. Wouldn’t recommend reading. This is one that I’ll forget quickly.

Well damn...I'm really sad and thoughtful right now. I'm going to need some time to process this one. Damn...that was quite a twist. First sentence: A gentle pull on my hand. Last sentence: The End Helena Ross (1994-2017)

Helena is a 30-something best-selling author. Helena has terminal cancer with only 3 months to live. Helena has one more story that she needs to tell. It won't be like her other fictional stories. This one will be Helena's story. As her ghostwriter says.. the book is her punishment and her absolution. Once upon a time she had a husband and a daughter. Four years ago, she lied.. to the police, to her friends, to the family she had left. Since then she has barred herself in her home, sold off literally all of the furnishings. She waits to die. Helena cancels all her contracts, much to her publisher's astonishment. The only thing Helena wants is a ghostwriter...she's afraid she won't live long enough to write it herself. Who she chooses is the first twist in this Psychological Thriller. From there it's like being on an emotional roller-coaster that just won't quit. There are twists and turns and such a surprising and unexpected ending. The alternating chapters kept me glued to the pages. The reader hears Helena's voice, and her publisher on occasion, and then the ghostwriter who is the only person privy to this particular story. The character development is outstanding! Helena may be forgiven, but in the beginning she just isn't a likable person.. not even from before she was diagnosed. She's rude, obnoxious, disagreeable, well ... you get the picture. Once my emotions took over, I figured out why she was the way she was. She's alone ..she's scared ... and she's riddled with guilt. It's that guilt that becomes the crux of her story. This was an amazing book by an author I had never heard of. I am definitely going to look at her other offerings. This story will stay with me for a long time. I'm emotionally exhausted and still feel a need to cry. Many thanks to the author / DCA / Netgalley for the digital copy of this extraordinary book. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

So many emotions, so many surprises, so much sadness contained in a few words... If you need happy, happy endings, not sure you'll find it, as you expect here.

Phenomenal! A truly thought provoking and emotional read. It's like a slow burn that stings but you just don't want it to stop. This story just hurts so good.

Wow! Wow! Wow! This sounded intriguing and had so many positive reviews that I just had to read it. It is very different from most books and takes you on a journey of discovery, deceit and despair. There is no happy ending here, just blunt honesty and terrible truths. Will most definitely be checking out this author's other books.

They say that sticks and stones will break your bones, but this story? It will be the one that kills me. - The Ghostwriter, Alessandra Torre If you pick up only one more book this year, make it this one. It is a roller coaster ride of emotions that will bust your heart. Helena Ross, a famous romance writer, has three months to live but has one last story to tell. With her deteriorating health, Helena needs a ghostwriter. The unfolding tale is perfectly paced with complex relationships and an amazing storyline of deep loss and love. You will fall in love with her selected ghostwriter. Their compassion and kindness is the perfect counterbalance to Helena's demanding and inflexible personality. You will feel EVERY emotion. It will leave you feeling raw and in awe of the author's genius. I can count on one hand the number of times that I have cried during a movie, a television show, or while reading a book. Helena's story sucked me in. I hated her. I pitied her. I feared for her. I wept for her. 5 stars. I look forward to reading more from Alessandra Torre.

The Ghost Writer is NOT a romance. It will take you on a wild ride, filled with suspense and intrigue. Helena is a romance author. After some devastating news, she realizes she has one last story that she needs to write. The story of her life and most importantly her deepest, darkest secret. I was completely sucked into this story from page one. I could not put it down. Prepare yourself for lots of twists and turns. The suspense will kill you. And in the end you will feel like your heart has been ripped from your chest! Alessandra has a way of writing a story that will stay with you long after you are finished. This one will keep you up at night!

6+ Stars!!!! I have been sitting here trying to figure out to express how amazing this story is without giving anything away. I did not read any teasers or reviews, I went in blind. To start, this book is extremely different from the other Alessandra Torre’s books I have read. IMO it is her best work to date. It is a haunting tale of a woman’s grief and suffering, and her journey to find forgiveness in herself. This story is beautiful and heartbreaking. It had my mind as well as heart captivated from the prologue. Each page had me more and more intrigued on where the story was going to take me. It definitely was an emotional journey.... so many feelings. Her writing style and timing were just amazing. Even though by the end my eyes were filled with tears, those letters were perfect. Honestly, I do not feel I am doing this book justice. This was one of those books that will stay with you for a long time. It is now one of my top reads of this year. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

What a unique story! From the beginning, Alessandra held me captive, and had me wondering what would happen next! Helena, a very secretive and intricate character kept me on my toes! Not at all what I expected, but The Ghost Writer is definitely worth a read!

If you are looking for a romance, then this isn’t the book for you. But if you are looking for a great read, add this to your list!! Hands down, this is my top read for 2017! This book is gripping from start to finish and leaves you with a book hangover. Helena is a writer with a secret. A secret she wants to put onto paper. Wanna know her secrets? Then read this book now! I recommend setting aside enough time to finish all at once because when you start, you won’t want to put it down. Another great job by Alessandra Torre.
