This series just keeps getting better! You know that saying, "Opposites attract?" Well, this installment plays on that premise and does it quite nicely. Wes is the affluent, guarded, playboy type, while Callie is the innocent, hardworking girl from a small town. Another favorite trope of mine is watching a strong hero fall for a heroine without seeing it coming. That's exactly the situation Wes finds himself in and watching it happen was beautiful. Like the first two books int he series, The Gilded Chain was beautifully written with rich characters and rich, descriptive settings that kept my interest from the moment I started reading. I can't wait to see where the author takes this series next.

Favorite Quotes: “The man could have talked angels into giving away their haloes without a second thought.” “The world seemed to slow to a stop, frozen like a golden ray of sunshine trapped in a jar, a memory preserved forever, just as perfect as anything could be.” “But Callie was a firecracker in his hands. Kissing her was like celebrating the Fourth of July.” “I like how you smell too… Makes me hungry for you, for your body, for your kiss. It makes me think that if dreams had a scent, they would smell like you.” “Your eyes. They’re cobalt. It’s such a rare shade of blue. No impurities, only endless depth.” “Callie, you’re the center of my world. A life without you isn’t living.” My Review: The Gilded Chain is 3rd book in this series and it picks up where book #2 - The Gilded Cage, left off. I enjoyed the plot and the characters as they get comfortable with each other and unearth their secrets and fears. The story was quite steamy with some light BDSM training and discussion, and the trend for suspense and maneuvering continues with another mystery for the new couple to solve. The intrigue is unrelated to previous books, however it would be easier to fully grasp the back story of the characters if the series were read in order.

If you follow my reviews, then you know that I love The Surrender Series and the two Lockwood brothers. They are just so delicious with their brooding intensity and dominant ways that there is no way a living woman can resist them. But apart from them, I was also always intrigued by the quiet but intense Wes Thorne. And I am so happy that I finally managed to read his story. It was simply incredible, filled with suspense, romance, hotness and danger around every corner. And it didn't hurt that Wes is gorgeous and he perfectly fits with Callie who is smart and a little bit of a firecracker. But also so submissive in the bedroom. In true Lauren Smith fashion, Wes is dominant alpha male who was somewhat of a player before he met his perfect other half. But once he laid eyes on her, his whole existence changed. She constantly occupies his thoughts and the only thing that he craves, is her. He finds out that he is not going to satisfy his urges and cravings of her with a short affair. He simply needs her to breathe. And that's where all the trouble comes from. He needs to convince her that he is worth the risk of heartbreak she is scared of. But in the end who can resist this man candy ;) Callie is also an incredible character. Even though she is young and definitely innocent in about quite a few things, she is also strong and independent and ready to fight her own battles. And even though her heart's been broken she still find the strength to chance it all on Wes, even if his intensity and passion scares her a little bit. But their romance is like fire and it burns quite bright even if there is danger lurking around the corner. And I can promise you that you won't have even a moment to relax, once you start reading the book :) I am not sure whether there is anything else I can say, except that that was another page turner by this amazing author. I loved every single word of it and I am so happy that I took a chance on this series all those months ago when the first book was released. I am just hoping that Royce will get his own book. I am sure that one will be another hit :) So, if you've read the previous two books in the series, you know that you are in for an incredible ride with this one. A ride full with danger, suspense, romance, scorching burn-the-sheets chemistry and a story that will simply win your heart. And if you haven't read the series, you simply have to rectify that mistake. I can guarantee that you will never regret it and you will be a fan for life ;) This review was originally posted at Living In Our Own Story Book Blog. I received an ARC of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Lauren Smith has a talent which enables you to perfectly picture the scene she has created from the breezes, to the sound of the insects, to the glow of a lantern - you feel as if you are in the setting yourself. As of this minute, "The Gilded Chain" is my favorite novel in the Surrender Series! Although, just as the previous two novels, this is a Romantic Suspense - this one feels more Romantic than Suspenseful, which was an excellent choice for a hero who has been illustrated as a rather callous and hardened character. The ideal and perfect setting for the dark hero and a virgin heroine is Paris, and with Lauren Smith's deft writing the scenery vividly comes to life. Without a doubt the heroine, Callie Taylor, undergoes a lot of change from being a young, virginal girl from a ranch in a small Colorado town to being swept into the life of a wealthy art dealer showing her life in Paris, art lessons in the Louvre and society life in Long Island - not to mention the darker world of BDSM which she had only read about in romance novels. The hero, Wes Thorne, grows out of his carefully built controlled and protective emotional shell. The main characters are well developed, we see many returning characters - though not all. I am curious if we will be seeing one of the Parisian secondary characters again - he was very intriguing. The sex scenes are wonderfully titillating and also very moving - which is quite a feat to accomplish. There are a just few things that irritated me - a couple of clichéd phrases such as "played like a Stradivarius" and a few colloquialisms such as ... ripped them 'clean off'. Part of me wishes the "virgin situation" would have been handled with a little more "vanilla" then moved into the BDSM but because Wes is an intense and dark character I went with it. But again, those are slight offenses to a fabulous Romance which is also, what I refer to as, a "Gateway BDSM" and a suspense. In "The Gilded Chain" Wes Thorne is a character who begins by being rather detached and driven toward a particular goal however almost simultaneously his concern about Callie's emotions show that he is not completely removed at all where she is concerned. Callie is a very strong character despite her sheltered upbringing, and although almost everything is new and exciting to her she is extremely insightful and wise. The Romance of the novel is fantastic, the setting of Paris is described beautifully and vividly, and the suspense is fraught with intriguing set ups, exquisite bait, and clever red herrings. Of course, the titular club, The Gilded Cuff, is an important setting and our favorite Paleontologist, Royce, is in the spotlight. I cannot wait for HIS story. As usual Lauren Smith brings us a novel loaded with Romance and amazing titillating sex courtesy of an experienced Dom and a woman eager to learn the exciting ways of the BDSM world - then ups the ante by adding to that an educated criminal suspense in trafficking stolen artwork. The Surrender series is a amazing combination of Romantic Suspense and Gateway BDSM. To read the entire review please visit: http://bit.ly/1kpQ4y9

When I get a new Lauren Smith book, I must stop everything else that I am reading and dive into her new book. The Gilded Chain delivers another great romance in The Surrender Series. Wes is a man, who doesn't believe in love but is drawn to Callie despite her innocence. They find passion with one another in Paris, along with deepening their mutual love of art. The reader knows that Wes will fall hard for Callie eventually. When he finally realizes he is love, it is a hard fall. I loved all the rich details that Smith included in this book. So far this is my favorite couple in the series, I REALLY want to see a Royce book come out.

4.5 - "Be brave for me." Stars! Lauren Smith has such a great talent when it comes to character development, and one of the main things that I have loved about this series so far is the fact that every yummy man that we have come into contact with has been completely different from his predecessor. I loved Emery and Fenn, but Wes… I had a funny feeling he was going to be something a little bit special, and boy did he get this readers heart a-pounding. We have seen bits and piece of Wes in the previous two books, being best of friends with the Lockwood brothers he has played a pivotal part in that family’s reconnection. But the actual man and what makes him tick, well the author managed to keep that a little more elusive. ”You think you can seduce me in thirty days.” I loved that Lauren took this story out of the US, and Callie and Wes’ fledgling relationship gets its wings whilst taking in the sights and sounds of Paris. This couple are diverse in that they are opposites in a lot of ways. Wes is experienced in all aspects of giving and receiving pleasure, Callie has spent her life on a remote farm, pretty isolated from the rest of the world. Wes has a deep appreciation for art and its preservation, Callie is an artist, who just needs a little of the right kind of encouragement and support to achieve excellence. "We're a disaster waiting to happen." Both of them together… the innocent and the experienced, the naïve around the confident, really gave this story a depth and charm. ”This is all new to me. I don’t know how to be with you…” Just Be… That’s all you have to do.” There is also the element of mystery and suspense flowing through this story and as with the previous books it adds another layer to the budding relationship between them. Callie is thrust into a world of which she knows little, and while Wes tries to deal with the presence of The Illusionist, an unknown presence, stealing valuable artworks from friends and acquaintances. ”If dreams had a scent they would smell like you.” I loved this book, it had a softer feel to it than its predecessors, and although there is the element of suspense the story really had the charm and feel of a good old-fashioned romance. Lauren Smith really does go from strength to strength with each book that she releases. Don’t be put off by this being the third book in The Surrender series, it can easily be read as a standalone, and if you are looking for a well written, intriguing and diverse romance you cannot go far wrong with The Gilded Chain. ARC generously provided by the author, and it was, as it always is my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.
