Madigan Knox and Grace Sheppard became sisters the day they entered their foster home. After living through a childhood nightmare, one brave act set them free, but split them apart into different homes.
As adults, they are reunited in the small coastal town they dreamed of living in as children, but the reality of life in Tall Pines is far from what they had imagined.
When a woman is found dead in her home, Madigan reports on the crime while Grace investigates. A dark connection to the victim is discovered, pulling them both closer to the crime and the traumatic past they are desperate to move on from.
With old wounds ripped open and dark secrets threatening their bond, the sisters must rely on each other more than ever before to survive.

Two girls living in a foster home become sisters. They reconnect later in life. One is a reporter and the other a detective. A woman found dead. A suspect that comes to light from a lady that disappeared years ago. Are they connected and did the same person kill them. A surprise conclusion to this suspense novel.

This book and its characters really resonated with me. "Friends are the family you choose" is one of my favorite expressions and is so applicable for this novel. Madigan and Grace share the kind of bond that my best friend and I also share. The plot was very well developed and peppered liberally with suspense, action and danger. Once I started this book, I found myself unable to put it down, until I reached the end. Then, I found myself wanting more Knox & Sheppard! I think that O'Brien did a beautiful job of crafting the elements of mystery and intrigue around the girls' sisterly relationship. *I received a complimentary ARC of this story in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
