Reviewed by Patricia Day for Readers' Favorite Life changed dramatically for Dana Montgomery, the main character in The Glass Ball, after her father died. Her mother succumbed to the offer of help from his brother, who moved into their home to help support them. This was a dramatic life changer for little Dana. Until that point she had enjoyed a close-knit relationship with her daddy, but this newcomer took away her childhood. When Dana reaches adulthood she finds relationships difficult. Closeness and intimacy challenge her sanity, to the point that she decides to leave her boyfriend, Mark, and take a sabbatical trip away from the demands and expectations of others. She needs to find peace within herself. Arriving in Alaska, she undertakes the task of becoming whole and finding contentment, enough to change her life or so she hopes. When she meets Luke MacFarland, her life takes a new turn. Dana finds in him a friend of a special kind. Does she return home, or does she stay in this northern paradise that Luke calls home? I will not say. You must read the book and find out for yourself. The Glass Ball by Jean Hatfield is a decidedly delightful story, despite the underlying shadow of child abuse. I found this a totally entrancing story, despite the traumas of Dana’s life. Her determination to empower herself and move onwards, instead of living in her dark past, makes her a woman of strength and I’d be honoured to know her and call her my friend. It didn't end the way I'd hoped, but it ended in a way that was right for Dana. I became very close to her, and definitely had my expectations dashed at the end. Very enjoyable, nevertheless. Beautiful story, despite Dana's childhood. A must-read at any time.

Excellent writing, elegant story, powerful message. Excellent writing. The author not only captures the beauty of the setting but the feeling of what it must be like to be in it. This book is not my typical genre but it was so well written I couldn't put it down. Had all the qualities I need in a book... Grabbed my attention right in the beginning, made me feel like I was making friends through the middle and left me wanting more at the end. Not to mention the message it provides. Powerful book.

This is such a thoughtful, well written book on so many levels.  This book is so much more than a love story, it's a story of how we as individuals can learn to overcome past circumstances and take control of our own destinies.  Dana learned how to help herself by  opening up to Luke and accepting his help.  In the process, they helped each other. The story is so well crafted, you will fall in love with the characters and Alaska, where the story takes place!

This book is so well written - I couldn't put it down and had to read it from cover to cover. It's not a typical love story as Dana tries to come to terms with a traumatic experience from her youth. Through Luke she is able to finally accept her past and move forward to her future. I loved this book!

A compelling story and a must read for anyone who has experienced tragedy or trauma in their lives and for anyone who is helping someone through this kind of crisis. It offers hope for healing - a life after trauma that can be bright. The main character, Dana, is such a real person, with doubts, fears, ups and downs. The reader travels with her on her journey in a breathtaking setting that is a kind of travel journal it itself. Buy it, read it, and pass it on to someone you know.
