The Glasswrights' Journeyman by Mindy Klasky

A land in ruin...

Rani Trader's beloved homeland of Morenia has been destroyed by fire. The only hope for rebuilding is for King Halaravilli to marry a wealthy princess from distant Liantine. Rani must set aside her own feelings to journey with the king, to negotiate for his bride.

In Liantine, Rani soon discovers a tangle of powerful entities: the wealthy Spiderguild with its monopoly on trade in silk and the brutal royal family, who have turned away from worship of the Thousand Gods. Even more intriguing, Rani finds the Players, traveling entertainers who have hoarded glassmaking secrets, guild-based knowledge that Rani craves.

Knowledge, though, always has a price. Can Rani strike a bargain that will save her homeland, her king, and her own heart?

About the Author

Mindy Klasky learned to read when her parents shoved a book in her hands and told her that she could travel anywhere in the world through stories. She never forgot that advice.

Mindy's travels took her through multiple careers. After graduating from Princeton University, Mindy considered becoming a professional stage manager or a rabbi. Ultimately, though, she settled on being a lawyer, working as a litigator at a large Washington firm. When she realized that lawyering kept her from writing (and dating and sleeping and otherwise living a normal life), Mindy became a librarian, managing large law firm libraries. Mindy now writes full time.

For years, Mindy's dating life was a travel extravaganza as well. She balanced twenty-eight first dates in one year, selecting eligible gentlemen from sources as varied as Washingtonian magazine ads, Single Volunteers of D.C., and supposedly-certain recommendations from best friends. Ultimately, she swore off the dating scene entirely. After two years of carefully-enforced datelessness, she made one last foray onto Match.com, where she met her husband—on her first match.

Mindy's travels have also taken her through various literary genres. In addition to her Red Dress Ink books, Mindy has written numerous short stories and six fantasy novels, including the award-winning, best-selling The Glasswrights' Apprentice.

In her spare time, Mindy quilts, cooks, and tries to tame the endless to-be-read shelf in her home library. Her husband and cats do their best to fill the left-over minutes.

In the kingdom of Moren, the capital city of Morenia is almost burnt to the ground by a fire whose origins are shrouded in mystery. King Hal, once thought daft by his own people, wants to rebuild the city but his coffers are practically bare. The people who helped put the fire out are suffering and dying from a plague known as firelung.

When the disease spreads to other castes and classes, Hal borrows money from the church at usury rates. To pay the loan off on time, Hal accedes to his councilors¿ wishes that he marry. He courts Princess Berylina of Liantine and begs Rani Trader to accompany him to negotiate on his behalf. She agrees even though she wants Hal to commit to rebuilding the Glasswright¿s Guild that his father dismantled. When they arrive in Liantine, their well thought out plans fall apart. Rani negotiates harder than she has ever done before to save her kingdom and Hal¿s throne.

This is the third Rani Trader book and it is the best book in the series. The protagonist has grown into a mature woman who realizes there is no such thing as instant gratification. Her friendship with the king is based on loyalty, honor and trust even when she doesn¿t agree with him. The bond is so strong no outsider can break it. The king¿s concern for his people and the sacrifices he is willing to make to alleviate their suffering is a beautiful thing to behold. Mindy j. Klasky has written a juicy epic fantasy that will appeal to fans of Mercedes Lackey.
