This is a beautiful and wonderfully written book for any daughter or son, and for any mother. A portrait of an incredible woman's approach to life and the gifts she gave her family. It is still resonating with me several weeks after I first picked it up. Whether your relationship with your own mother has been close, loving, distant, fraught, or all those things this is a story that speaks to each of us. Through the eyes of her mother, Mary Finlayson, Mary Lou relives the life of her family and shares her own responses to the treasures of the God Boxes her mother kept over the course of many years. She writes with candor and love and shares a powerful lesson of both living and letting go. Immediately I found myself looking at my mother in a different light as well as wondering how I could incorporate a similar life view for my own daughters. From my own experience i know that using a 'god' box for worries large and small is a powerful tool--that i have not used nearly often enough. What a great reminder of the things that truly matter in a life. If you haven't already, visit Mary Lou's website under the name of thegodboxproject and view the short film book trailer. The audio and film clips of Mary Finlayson are heartbreakingly poignant. Also interesting to note is that Mary Lou is devoting the profits of The God Box to local cancer and hospice care charities.

Although a wonderful and heartwarming story, I found it distracting to read this due to the fact that it was not formatted properly for the Nook! As ebooks go, it was expensive and short, and I think I missed a lot due to improper formatting. I would like to exchange the Nookbook for the actual book.

I received this as a Mother's Day gift and enjoyed what I was able to read, but the format/layout was such that each page had just a small section of writing in it, pictures were cut off and large bold type from another page would appear over the words on the page I was trying to read, making it impossible to read. I tried to resize the font and layout several times, but it didn't make it any better. I have never had this problem with any other ebook. The story itself, from what I was able to read, was inspirational - a nice idea I wish I would have thought of years ago.

What a wonderful story! While I think this book will resonate very well with anyone who has suffered a loss or is facing the loss of an important loved one, particularly a parent, or anyone who has a super close family or always wishes they had one, or anyone that believes in the power of prayer...this story resonated for me on a much more fundamental level. To me, it was a story about something we can all relate to - finding whatever way works for us to "let go". All the stress and worries and cares that we all have and can relate to on a daily basis, if we find a way to let them go, tucking them in whatever sort of "box" works for us, then, not only do we have the capacity to take better care of ourselves, but it unleashes so much more potential to take better care of others as well. Greater empathy for all the worries, known and unknown, of everyone we encounter, loved ones and strangers - what a gift to be able to unburden others in that way, and how easily it can be done. It's a GREAT gift for a book. Definitely consider for Mother's Day. It's a quick read, but such a beautiful hardback. I bought it for myself and then immediately ordered a copy for my friend, a new mom, for her birthday.
