Fred Bittner's The God Whisperer was originally developed as a teaching tool for the singles ministry that he led in Fullerton, CA, synthesizing his twenty years in full time ministry and sixteen years in education into a learning tool for the teaching and self-teaching of Acts of Surrender, Acts of Obedience, Acts of Faithfulness, and obedience to God. Bittner applies dog training principles, like those on the television show The Dog Whisperer, as a teaching tool, applying the same principles to religious exploration and study and leading a godly life of rules, boundaries, and discipline. Although applying training principles for dogs to those of disciples of God may seem like an odd concept, chapters like "Old Dog, New Tricks," which teaches how to integrate the teachings of God and the book into your life, make for a seamless fusion of the two. "Flocks, Packs, and the Church," "The Pack Leader," "The Pack Leader's Role" outlines the varying roles within the church through traditional structures of dog packs, teaching us how to become part of God's obedient flock-all the while pulling on the strength of the community to build the strength of our faith to pull as a team, and find the power, support, and hope of the pack to fortify our faith and journey. Using various dog training commands in section two, the author highlights various aspects of discipline necessary for faith and for surrendering your life to God. "Settle" teaches us to build intimacy with Jesus, "Leave It" teaches us to yield authority, "Wait" teaches us to trust in God's timing, and "Stay" teaches us how to remain spiritually strong in tough times. The God Whisperer is an ideal book for both group Bible study, as well as personal exploration of faith-inspiring readers and instructing their obedience and faith. Bittner's unique perspective and parallels create a more accessible means of understanding our faith by offering metaphors that help us to understand the spiritual world through earthly teachings.

It has been ten years since I have read an "ink and paper" book. I had a hard time putting this one down. It places a completely new perspective on many aspects that I have glossed over in the past. I learned many years ago that a test of whether what someone is telling you is of God or not is to find it in the Bible. The incorporation of Biblical references that back up what is being said is fantastically done. One aspect that really nailed the points of the book was the "Think it through" and "On your own" sections of each chapter. As someone with a dog of "Good breeding" I find this a marvelously applicable book. But, even for those that don't own an animal, or in some cases are owned, this is really easy to comprehend and apply.

The God Whisperer is an easy read that suprises you with the depth of its content. Fred Bittner has the ability to teach you about things that you didn't know you needed to know, but you're glad he did. Whether you are a dog lover or just an animal lover, Bittner uses the principles that we use to train our furry friends and applies that to a relationship with God. Great devotional, small group study, or gift.
