The Good the Bad and the Funky

Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, the ingenious rhythm section that drove the Talking Heads, revisit that funky groove thing with the Tom Tom Club's first release since 1992's Darksneakloveaction. Like their 1981 debut, Tom Tom Club, this newest collection of electronic pop delivers the kind of happy hip-hop that very much resembles the duo's fresh, original sound. But like any great dance record, it's all about the rhythms, and here Weymouth and Frantz weave a tight, textured beat of bass, drums, scratching, and loops. Weymouth delivers her vocals in a nonchalant, sweet-rapper style, which lends that breezy, English-pop feel to originals such as "Who Feelin' It" and the Funkadelic-influenced "She's a Freak." For diversity, the album also features a host of guest vocalists who dip into genres such as dub reggae (Mystic Bowie), ska (Toots Hibbert), and soul (Charles Pettigrew). Also making a cameo appearance is the synthetic, '80s-tinged keyboard sound from the group's 1981 hit "Genius of Love," which returns here to adorn a clever, robotic cover of Donna Summer's "Love to Love You Baby." And why shouldn't the Toms quote themselves? If this disc has half the splice potential of their debut -- which has been sampled by the likes of Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five, Tupac Shakur, and Puff Daddy -- these beats, too, will go on and on.
