Sarah Dessen meets Morgan Matson in the perfect summer debut about learning to say goodbye—or finding a reason to stay.

Caroline is counting the days until September, when she'll turn seventeen and she and her older boyfriend, Jake, will run away together. She doesn't feel connected to anyone at home now that she has him, and she can't wait to see the world with the most important person in her life. So with just a few more months until freedom, she spends her summer working at the local aquarium gift shop and dreaming of the fall.

Then she meets Georgia, a counselor at the aquarium's camp, and Caroline's world changes. Through pizza lunches, trips to amusement parks, and midnight talks, Georgia begins to show Caroline there's more to life than being with Jake.

The stronger Georgia and Caroline's bond grows, the more uneasy Caroline becomes about her plans to leave. When summer comes to a close, she'll have to say goodbye to someone...but who is she willing to lose?

This is a delightful summer read about friendship, love, and how big every decision feels when you're a teenager. Nostalgic and heartwarming, Caroline's friendship with Georgia is sure to put a smile on your face at least once.

Do you know that feeling when the exact right song comes on at the exact right moment — when the rhythm of the world syncs up with your life for a few beats? That’s what it feels like to read The Goodbye Summer by Sarah Van Name. Caroline has made a choice: she’s going to run away with her boyfriend, Jake, at the end of the summer. Until then she’s going to work at the aquarium in town, save some money, and enjoy one last summer of the life she’s known so far. I think it’s worth remarking that as a reader it’s easy to disagree with Caroline. But, her decision is grounded by her inner monologue — her anxiety, her expectations, her need for validation all make the choice an understandable one for Caroline. Into this storm of self-doubt and potential self-destruction walks Georgia. A fiercely smart and determined dynamo who offers Caroline a kind of friendship and love that she’s never had. The choice becomes harder to make. Following Caroline’s journey is a joy and so is The Goodbye Summer. It explores the sometimes myopic reality of youth with the yearning for more adulthood brings. It doesn’t hide from the flaws of its characters. It explores the pressures and realities of growing up, particularly growing up as a woman. It doesn’t always provide simple answers. It’s easy to devour but peppered with the occasional gut-punch of a sentence or sentiment so beautiful you have to pause. Sink into The Goodbye Summer, you won’t regret it.
