There is a lot of information in Gorgeously green Diet about healthy eating and it is useful for those people used to eating processed food. Uliano, who wrote Gorgeously Green and appeared on Oprah, writes: "Unless the food you eat is minimally processed and packaged, unless its Gorgeously Green--it is likely to be lacking in vitamins and loaded with toxins that could inhibit metabolism and lead to obesity." Uliano discusses how making even small changes in ones diet can help impact the health of the planet. She advocates "moderation," and tells the reader that she is a flexatarian. She offers three diets in different shades of green--light, medium and dark. Each diet covers a week's worth of menus. There is a section on composting and gardening. According to Uliano, a 2007 Cornell University study showed that an all vegan diet had more effect on the planet than a diet containing a daily 2 ounce serving of meat. The book outlines how to select the best types of food--grass fed beef, vs. feedlot, for example. This is very useful for newbies and she covers virtually all choices. Suggestions are made on how to pick food at a restaurant and include a variety of places. She suggests what to get rid of in the pantry and what to stock. There was a chapter on cooking the basics likes stocks tomato sauce--all perfect for beginners. There is a section on fitness, beauty & health and what vitamins to take. One chapter was on inviting your dream guests for dinner--I found it bizarre--and her list included Shakespeare, Jesus, Julia Roberts and Oprah. Somehow, can't see that group together... There is a nice sized section of recipes. The book concludes with resources on where to find food that Uliano likes and it is quite helpful for those unaccustomed to grocery shopping outside the traditional stores. I do question her authority on some of the statements she makes, as she is neither a doctor nor a nutritionist,but her diet recommendations seem fine and are certainly not extreme. Uliano covers a lot of ground in this book on food and recipes. The title implies a diet book, but it is much more than the typical diet book. It has the usual suspects: eating plans, nicely exercises, allowed and not allowed foods. But the book expands the idea of dieting and shows that most of us need to put more than our bodeis on a diet. The pantry and refrigerator are prime targets, and we can move out from there. Uliano's plan has a basic, but thoughtful, beginning: figure out what you really want before you begin. How many times have I jumped into a plan of self-improvement in excitement after reading a book or seeing something on television? And this book does inspire, It connects what we eat with the ecological and environmental movements we are all thining about. It offers three different levels of being green to show that living better is possible for all of us. And she lists many websites and company names that sell the kinds of healthy foods and products recommende in the bookthat makes it easy to do further research on the specific topics that appeal to you.

This book has some good information. The format is not consistent which bothers me. Some of the recipes are unclear. A lot of the info is a repeat from her first book. The book I recommend below is much more scientific and accurate
