The Grand Hotel by Carolyn Van Dyke

The Grand Hotel is the story of dilapidated "flop houses", the people who live there, and a homeless alcoholic amnesiac, known only as Charles, who seems to be more than he appears. A series of devastating incidents fail to destroy him, and he is able to show community leaders that the downtown hotels can be restored along with the lives and the souls of those within.

About the Author

Carolyn Van Dyke grew up in the city of Stockton, California, which has become famous for its crime rate, low school scores and, most recently, bankruptcy. But, before all this, it was a pleasant farming community. Carolyn went to Stanford University, obtained a degree, married a farmer, raised six children, and went to work in public social service. There she had direct personal contact with the segment of our culture described in "The Grand Hotel." She could envision the problems that would arise should the city council destroy the living space for such as these. But the bulldozer won the argument, and Stockton made one of the first of many mistakes. "The Grand Hotel" is intended to describe the other possibility - restoration - not only of an ugly building but of the lives of the people who live there. Carolyn now lives in a log cabin on a riverbank near Stockton.
