Overview

Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas started their careers at about the same time. Yet while Tebaldi enjoyed tremendous success in her heyday and is still regarded with almost reverential respect, it is fair to say that her star has been somewhat eclipsed by Callas. This is a shame, really, for Tebaldi not only possessed a drop-dead gorgeous voice; she also had considerable dramatic flair -- a class act in every respect. Start with the second disc of this set, and listen to the luscious tone and unforced power of her earliest Decca recordings (taped in 1949). Callas may bind the notes of "Tacea la notte placida" (Il Trovatore) in a tighter legato, but Tebaldi's has a marvelous sense of youthful spontaneity. For the next two decades, Tebaldi was Decca's star soprano (though Joan Sutherland nipped at her heels), giving us memorably exquisite portrayals of La Gioconda, Aïda, Desdemona, Amelia, Mimi, Tosca, Suor Angelica, Madama Butterfly, and other heroines. And while Callas helped to revive interest in the bel canto style of Bellini and Donizetti, Tebaldi reintroduced us to the beauties of neglected gems like La Wally and Adriana Lecouvreur. Opera buffs will want to have these complete sets, of course, but this wide-ranging compilation is a handsome souvenir of a glorious career.
