Gr 7 Up-Hosted and narrated by NBC anchor, Tom Brokaw, this is the video version of his best-selling book. Using clear vintage newsreel footage interspersed with interviews with mid-western World War II veterans, this is essentially a personal tribute to those who grew up during the Great Depression. There are convenient breaks in the film, originally for commercials, that will allow teachers to initiate classroom material presentation and discussion. Intuitively obvious and intentionally detailed are the long-term effects on family members and the nation as a whole of having persevered through the Great Depression and World War II. While accessible to junior high/middle schoolers and high school students, many may react with a "so what" attitude. It is apparent that the originally intended audience was the adult viewing public rather than secondary school students. The video can be used in high school sociology classes studying changes in the American population today, but it may be more appropriately acquired by public libraries wishing to pair it with the print version.-Scott Johnson, Whittemore Park Middle School, Conway, SC Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
