A note from Julia: I love to read anything that catches my interest – my books reflect this eclectic taste: Paranormal time travel romance, London criminals and fat old detectives, I even created an alternate universe where mythical beasts exist.

This the first book of a planned trilogy. Book two is available at Amazon. As of this writing there is no book three. This is a clean read: no sex, no swearing, no hard violence. This book is suggested for early teens. Neb, an unnamed orphan boy who has learned to answer to a name that means "no-one," helps care for the gryphons in his small country. He knows his chance of being picked as a gryphon rider, a soldier in training, is not good, but he stands with the well-born teens. He is overlooked, and another teen is assigned the hard-headed, disobedient and mischievous gryphon, Balkind. Balkind, surprisingly, refuses his new rider and won't allow him to mount. Annoyed, the military head takes the rejected rider onto his own gryphon and states he'll be back for the young Balkind. Settling down in the presence of Neb, the boy decides it isn't fair to the young gryphon to be left behind, so he decides to fly Balkind to the training grounds himself. On the way, he and Balkind come to a sort of mutual understanding, and engage in unexpected adventures before almost reaching their goal. The trope of young, lower class teen overcoming class prejudice by mastering a skill expected to be performed by the higher class, is frequently a pleasant and affirming story. Who doesn't like the underdog to win? Unfortunately, this book borrows too heavily from other, similar stories. The human characters have distinct personalities, which helps the reader to track them easily through the story. They could use a little more description; their personalities are different, but their clothes seem pretty much all the same. By contrast, Balkind is lovingly detailed, making too large an imbalance between him and Neb. The story is a pleasant and predictable read with an easily recognized hero, a cute animal and trials the two of them go through as they begin to mature together. As the story starts immediately with assigning riders to the young gryphon, a prequel would be interesting to read. This book is well edited and proofread. This reader looks forward to the next book in the trilogy.

Fun read, some editing issues but overall an excellent story. Some graphic but appropriate violence, hence the rating. Looking now to see what's next.
