Every day families say good-bye as a loved one serving in the military goes off to take up a post somewhere in the world. For many, these are areas of conflict where they face constant danger. Some do not make it home. Others come home physically injured. Still others come home with injuries that are not visible to the eye, especially to strangers. Author T. Jacira Paolino’s The Grizzly Bear’s Eyelash is a heartwarming and timely story about a serious after effect of war. Originally published in 2006 by Ms. Paolino in Italian as La storia della ciglia dell’orso grizzly, this book won the Silver Award (Farfallo d’Argento) at the XXIV National 50 & Più Competition for Prose in Levico Terme, Trentino, Italy. Readers of all ages will be moved by the universal story told in The Grizzly Bear’s Eyelash. Many families today can relate to Miyaku’s sorrow and love for her husband as they encounter difficulties when their loved ones return from war.

The Grizzly Bear’s Eyelash by Jacira Paolino is an enchanting and charming children’s book with a surprising moral lesson contained within its entertaining storyline. This past holiday season brought great conversations among children and adults alike as we considered its lessons on love and the essential element of sacrifice for the protection of that which one holds in great value. Humans have a tendency to regard their life experiences through filters of thought, and more than not, those filters can hinder our perception of reality. Children will appreciate the story for its sheer entertainment, experiencing emotions created by suspenseful moments of caution and the delight found in a sense of progress and accomplishment in ones’ goals thereafter. The message of triumph is exhilirating. Adults will discover a deeper message of love, compassion, empathy, sacrifice and faithfulness. The Grizzly Bear’s Eyelash is a message of hope despite ever-present obstacles that will speak to and inspire courage in children of all ages. I would recommend reading it often.
I was a small part of this little book from shortly after it had won the award in 2006, starting just with encouragement and later a little editing. I have my copies, but purchased this book to give to a woman who so desperately needs this message right now. This book is not just a charming and timeless message of Love, but a deeply held and healing truth. Buy one and give to any family you know who have served our country. Barbara A. Riley
