The Author had taught me a wealth of knowledge with her last book, “The Healing Powers of Honey” and “Coffee” has been no different. I’ve always loved the aroma and “romance” of coffee—from the days as a youngster, nose in the air, whiffing the smell of coffee beans grinding in our local A & P, to sneaking sips of my Mom’s iced coffee (back in the 50’s, before it was “cool”). But, did you know the coffee tree was first discovered in Ethiopia? How about that coffee is the most traded product in the world, after petroleum? Can you believe world coffee production is estimated at 100-120 million bags per year? Are you aware of the four color/roast categories? (Answer: Light, Medium, Medium-Dark and Dark) Coffee is the leading source of disease-fighting antioxidants among foods and beverages. The average person receives approximately 1299 Mg. of antioxidants from coffee. Coffee also contains ingredients of which you might not be aware, such as: Riboflavin, Zinc, Potassium, Niacin, Thiamin, Phosphorus, Magnesium, and Calcium to name a few. Sounds a bit like a daily multi-vitamin to me! Coffee also contains more fiber than orange juice! So many healthy properties to consider besides getting your heart and brain going in the morning and helping you over the 3 P.M. “slump” at the workplace. The amount of healing properties due to the antioxidants is amazing and may help you lower your blood pressure and cholesterol readings as well as lowering insulin in diabetes and fighting cancer. Coffee may not be for everyone, so please note that Ms. Orey suggests strongly that you consult with your physician if you have any questions concerning your possible health problems and suggests moderation where coffee is concerned. PLEASE , Do Not allow animals to have coffee as it could be as toxic as chocolate. Drinking coffee as with many other beverages, including water, (eight-8 ounce glasses or cups are recommended) help you to eat less, flush toxins from your body as well as assist in weight loss along with reducing fats in your diet. Coffee, with its antibacterial and antioxidant properties can help to soothe or eliminate some maladies, including; allergies, bone loss, colds and coughs, the flu, gout, headaches and hot flashes (coffee may be the new “green tea” for menopause), pink eye, PMS and much more—although I think it will take a lot more than coffee to help my penmanship! The Author has included some scrumptious recipes, many I am planning to try such as: Coffee Pork Chops, Cappuccino Cookies, Mystery Mocha Cake, Profiteroles with Coffee Rum Sauce, Sassy Sodas and Cappuccino Blocks to flavor your coffee. The coffee industry will keep flourishing with more cozy, social coffee shops springing up on the horizon, the continuation to discover interesting flavors and flavor combinations and the ever-increasing ways we can brew this magical, marvelous liquid of myth and legend. So whether you salivate for your favorite mug filled with caff or decaf brew,(instant or perked--love the “blip, blip” of the percolator), can’t get through the day without a frothy Frappacchino, Cappuccino, or a steamy Latte, or perhaps you want to enhance the flavors in your food, don’t feel guilty—you will find out, with reading Ms. Orey’s fascinating book that you’re doing something good for you! I thoroughly enjoyed learning so much about coffee, and, like before with “Honey”, relished the personal stories and reflections the Author tucks into the pages. Enjoy!! Nancy Narma

Cal Orey’s “Healing Powers of…” books are a favorite collection of mine. I’ve found so much useful and interesting information about each topic (I wonder how she has picked out all of my favorites so far? If she reads this, I hope she chooses tea next… it would be a great follow-up to coffee!) She blends the best information that is helpful to you, along with anecdotes and oh!…the RECIPES!! each volume and her combination makes for an enjoyable, informative and interesting read; books you’ll turn to time and time again. Reviewed by Karen P. for Readers Favorite "The Healing Powers of Coffee" by Cal Orey is just another example of her ability to integrate excellent research with wonderful personal stories and good science. The research on the healing properties themselves is something that will capture the interest of most people who tend toward organic or natural foods and homeopathic healing. I liked the explanation of the process of "seed to cup" as well as the information about the various coffee blends. The section about the historical significance and evolution of coffee ignited my interest in how we have become such a coffee-loving nation. Even the brief section about the types of milks used in various coffees gave wonderful food for thought as most people rarely give consideration to that simple pleasure while pouring milks and sugars into their cup of Joe. I loved hearing about the personal experiences of the author as a child. They brought back memories of my own and are sure to trigger images for most readers. The knowledge contained in the book reflects superb research which lends itself to the transition to practical knowledge. Perhaps my favorite parts of the book were the marvelous recipes which undoubtedly enhance the quality of a cup of coffee. From specialty coffees to side dishes to full-fledged meals, Orey gives the reader one gustatory treat after another. If you want to know the secrets to a good cup of coffee, a latte, or an expresso, this is the book for you!
