If you can't motivate your team, you won't be effective no matter how well you may understand your organization. Human nature being what it is, people generally respond well to the same kind of treatment in any context. Perhaps surprisingly, I've found that most of what motivates them are non-rational incentives, so I devote most of this essay to them . . . .
About the Author
Russell E. Palmer is Chairman and CEO of The Palmer Group, a corporate investment firm. He served for several years as Dean of the Wharton School, where he was instrumental in attracting over 100 new faculty members, building a new executive education program and complex, and raising over $120 million. He served for ten years as Managing Partner and CEO of Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte & Touche), becoming CEO at age 37, the youngest person ever to attain that position in a “Big Eight” firm. He continues to serve as a Director of Honeywell International, Inc. and The May Department Stores Company. Palmer is a member of the Trustees Emeritus of the University of Pennsylvania and a Trustee of the National Constitution Center. His articles and essays have appeared in BusinessWeek, The New York Times, the Journal of Accountancy, and other publications.
