This is a marvelous book. Everyone should read it!!
This is the most profound treaty on love and honor that I have ever read. Incredibly rich in historical detail and uncommonly lush in imagry. The characters are whole complicated and living souls whose stories will move you. You must read the whole trilogy, it is absolute magic and inspires a belief in a greater truth and beauty for humanity.
Edith Pargeter's 'Heaven Tree Trilogy,' of which this is the first book and the best, is truly one of the most moving, profound and memorable works of literature I have ever read and re-read. That the trilogy is currently out of print is incomprehensible. Harry Talvace, Madonna Benedetta and Ralf Isambard are surely three of the most fascinatingly developed characters in all fiction, and their respective fates play out every possible theme of love and redemption. (Do not fail to finish the trilogy!) I am not the only one who has found this a life-changing book.
