Vianne di Rocancheil has been largely content to play the gawky provincial. As lady in waiting at the Court of Arquitaine, she studies her books, watches for intrigue, and shepherds her foolhardy Princesse safely through the glittering whirl. Court is a sometimes-unpleasant waltz, especially for the unwary, but Vianne treads its measured steps well.

Unfortunately, the dance has changed. Treachery is afoot in gilded and velvet halls. A sorcerous conspiracy is unleashed, with blood, death, and warfare close behind. Her Princesse murdered and her own life in jeopardy, Vianne must flee, carrying the fate of her land with her—the Great Seal of Arquitaine, awake after its long sleep. Invasion threatens, civil war looms, and the conspiracy hunts for Vianne di Rocancheil, to kill or to use her against all she holds dear.

A life of dances, intrigues, and fashion has not prepared her for this. Nor has it prepared her for Tristan d'Arcenne, Captain of the King's Guard and player in the most dangerous games conspiracy can devise. Yet to save her country and avenge her Princesse, Vianne will become what she must, say what she should, and do whatever is required.

A Queen can do no less.

This is the second series I have read from Ms. Saitcrow and I am now extremely impressed with her versatility! She went from dark and dangerous demon hunter, Jill Kismet, to a well bread d¿mselle with a twist. Saintcrow paints a very believable tapestry of old world intrigue mixed with a magical flair. I couldn¿t put it down and now I am anxiously waiting for the next installment.

I am a fan of Saincrows other series'(especially Dante Valentine), but I was unsure if this latest offering would be my cup of tea...I loved it and cannot wait for the Bandit King.

I bought this book as a distraction from studying too much for my finals. It is an easy read. Let me warn you though that it ends on a cliffhanger. I would have waited for the second book to come out before getting this had I known. And it cliffhangs just in the perfect, most infuriating, spot possible! I laughed a lot reading this book. To me, it was like watching two people who obviously cared for each other stupidly not tell each other. Which led to many fights, mean words, and entertainment. This book was very familiar to me though because it almost identical in sequence to another book I have recently read. I can't remember what it was called but I will figure it out. It's either Aurelia or another book. Other then that it was a good book!

It was a great book. She did a great job of mixing romance, medieval times, magic & intrigue. I am looking forward to the sequel. The only thing I didn't care for was Viv. was a little whining at times & depsite Tristan & the guard thinking of her as a "smart" woman, they tend to treat her like a child. I thought a few things could have been explained more since Ms Saintcrow gives the impression that many of the characters understand the Aryx & it's powers. I would have thought Tristan would have explained more to Viv.

This was the first book I have read by this author, and I was completely drawn in literally from the first sentence. Lots of palace intrigue, action, romance, and astute world-building. After investing in reading 400 + pages, however, I was most distraught to discover this is not a stand-alone tale. As others have mentioned, I would prefer to know up front. I really considered downrating this title because of this "cheat" to the reader, but it was such a superb tale nonetheless that I could not bring myself to do so. As I read, I pictured how well suited this would be turned into a movie or miniseries, and I will be anxiously awaiting the sequel.

This new world created from Lillith Saintcrow was so different from everything I've ever read from her. It does run on the slightly long, but I enjoyed the twist at the end.
