Overview

In the ruined abbeys and elaborately decorated caves of England, the notorious Hellfire Club held meetings that shocked and terrified the countryside. London madams scoured the city for young girls to supply the club. Rakes flocked to its meetings.

Yet it was typical of the late eighteenth century that the club's members included famous men of the arts, politicians, even the then-Prime Minister; that a list of members reads like an "honors list" of the eminent men of the day; and that when news of the club's activities leaked out, it caused the biggest political scandal in British history.

Brilliant, perverse, equally capable of elaborately obscene jests and the intricacies of parliamentary politics, the members of the Hellfire Club were the most astonishing men of their time, and the record of their revels has fascinated and repulsed the world for two centuries.

I have always had an interest in history because history is made up of people and people are always interesting. This is an excellent example of interesting history. It is unbelieveable how much money, effort, and imagination went into this endeavor. The book is very interesting and it covers an event in history that is usually avoided by conventional history because of how immoral these people were. Even though I fond what these people did repugnant, I must say that the book was never dull and I was disappointed when it came to an end. I highly recomend it to anyone with an interest in history and the tolerance to get past the immoral acts that were commited. This is the only book I have ver come accross that gives a history of the Hellfire Club.

A wonderful insight into the Hellfire cult. It is fast paced and filled with facts, a short book but fascinating.
