About the Author

Robert “Bob” Kalian, PM, is a Mason of forty-seven years and a member of the Scottish Right for forty-six years. He was chosen in 1975 to write The Bicentennial History of Rhode Island Freemasonry. In 1976, he began a newspaper called The Rhode Island Freemason, which was the first statewide communication for the craft in over 125 years.
Bob is a graduate of the Providence, Rhode Island, public school system and attended Providence College, where he received degrees in both political science and economics. Later in life, he attained an MBA in marketing and advertising from the University of Rhode Island. Still later, he attended Brown University and worked toward a graduate degree in Chinese literature, history, and language.
After completing his first year at Providence College, because of his active reserve status, he was called up for duty in the armed forces during the Korean conflict. He did not invoke this right of deferment because he felt a responsibility to the United States to serve one’s country.
His resulting military career was extremely interesting. While in the armed forces, stationed in Camp Pickett, Virginia, he was sent to Fort Meade, Maryland, for advanced instruction and training. He completed courses in radiological warfare and munitions and then was transferred to the accelerated language school majoring in German. Upon completion, he returned to his unit and was accidentally sent to the Fort Sill Artillery School in Oklahoma. Upon completion of a two-week course, he volunteered for airborne ranger training. At twenty-one years of age, he earned the rank of Master Sergeant.
