after a review by a blogger friend and seeing Nicole Poole narrate this book i decided to listen to the audiobook of this book. I really enjoyed this story, with it's focus on the social complexities of this futuristic society, but also a well done developed world with well done sci-fi elements. I enjoyed reading about Tracie and Mercedes, who are on opposites sides of the social ladder, but who form a connection nonetheless. They both end of at the prestigious High Ground academy and it was interesting to see them find their way and the challenged they faced. they both face very different challenges too and I liked seeing the perspectives of two such different characters. There is a huge cast of side characters and I struggled at times remember who was who. There is a lot of hints and foreshadowing that I think will become relevant in later books. The pacing is quite gentle, which works here, but toward the end things sped up and I had to know what would happen. Nicole Poole's narration was awesome. The audiobook was pleasant to listen to and I like how everyone has a different voices and vibe due to how she narrates them. She also handled the Spanish words well. All in all this was a great science fiction read and I am glad I picked it up and am eager to see how the series continues.
The High Ground (Imperials, #1) by Melinda M. Snodgrass High Grounds is a decisive thriller of the space academy series. Based off Melinda Snodgrass’s own interest in history and the for drawn conclusion that history will inevitably repeat itself. Mankind has achieved space flight and conquered the realms of time and space. Only to fall prey to the petty partitions of society and the elevation of class systems throughout the stars. Using money to determine the equity of nobility has created not only a class system but a problem for its rulers. The Emperor for the first time like predecessors i earth's historic pass has been unable to produce a require heir apparent. In his personal struggle he begins to change society creating like the modern age a change in inheritance of the royal lineage. Yet his attempts to change society from within has caused intrigue and espionage in his subjects. This story is not only about class systems, or about the society of the stars based on the inheritance of monopolies but on the reality of human nature, and the testament of triumphant attempts to surpass that nature. I have already pre-order the next book in the series, and am impatiently awaiting the next edition next summer. Congratulations and bows to the queen of literature with a historical twist, Melinda Snodgrass you have done it again creating characters that we have to see surpass our expectations.
