The Colorado Avalanche, of the National Hockey League, have had a stellar career. Moving to Denver in 1995 they captured their first of two Stanley Cups in 1996. However, their history began long before the late 90s in Quebec Canada and before they were a part of the National Hockey League. With stars such as Marc Tardif and the Statsny brothers, the Nordics were a powerhouse. Their first few seasons were marked by losses, but eventually they would win the World Hockey Association championship. Their strength would make them one of the teams folded into the National Hockey league when the World Hockey League folded. However, troubles with finances required that the Nordics relocate to Denver, and thus the legacy began. As with other books in the "History of Hockey" series, Nichols does a nice job of covering the major players of dynamic teams. However, as with other volumes, the lack of a timeline and any reference sections makes this a difficult book to include in a non-fiction collection. 2004, Creative Education, Ages 8 to 12.
