Overview

The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart

The debut of a phenomenal new middle-grade talent.

In all the ways that matter, Mark is a normal kid. He's got a dog named Beau and a best friend, Jessie. He likes to take photos and write haiku poems in his notebook. He dreams of climbing a mountain one day.

But in one important way, Mark is not like other kids at all. Mark is sick. The kind of sick that means hospitals. And treatments. The kind of sick some people never get better from.

So Mark runs away. He leaves home with his camera, his notebook, his dog, and a plan to reach the top of Mount Rainier--even if it's the last thing he ever does.

The Honest Truth is a rare and extraordinary novel about big questions, small moments, and the incredible journey of the human spirit.

The book came out yesterday (Jan 27th) and I've already finished. The editorial reviews above share many of my thoughts: this is a fast paced, heart wrenching, book that doesn't pull any punches. I'll be giving this book to a few friends with kids and look forward to seeing how they enjoy the story. The main character Mark does seem to complain about his headaches regularly, but I suppose if I had headaches all the time I would likely do the same. There were moments when I suspected Beau, his trusted dog and sidekick, to save day the such a way that would not have believable and I was happy to see the author keep the dogs heroic actions within reason. If you have not discussed hard hitting issues like cancer, running away, and telling the truth this book is great at opening those conversations.  Certainly a book that will stir your emotions and get your heart racing.

Amazing book. Some parts are good enough to make some people cry. Overall, the book was very well written, super cool, and tells Mark's feelings very clearly. Can't believe that this was the author's first book. Awesome!
