THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT - ILLUSTRATED BY RANDOLPH CALDECOTT - A GUNSTON CLASSIC

This story is one of a genre created by adding on new phrases one after another to a repeated rhythm, developing a somewhat unusual plot, which can be extended indefinitely. Caldecott begins with the cover and title page showing the farmer Jack greeting a guest at the front of his house, and then goes on to tell the traditional story. The development of the plot, skillfully synchronized with the turning of the pages, shows how Caldecott's nimble brush opened up new possibilities for picture books as an art separate from illustrations and decorative art. A truly gifted illustrator for his time. Classic stories and illustration enjoyed today.
