One of the the most unusual & intriguing stories I have read in a long time! Fast paced & well written, a perfect escape! Set in Victorian-era Europe, a philandering colonel, scheming Illuminati bad guys and a pure-hearted heroine, Sophia battle it out for control of the mysterious Villa D'Amici - a mountain castle with age-old secrets to protect. Upon meeting Sophia D'Amici, Colonel Christopher Jordan Haldane begins having strange out-of-body experiences that he can't understand, but which lure him ever deeper into the mysteries of Villa D'Amici and his feelings for Sophia, as she struggles to save her castle and against the gender roles imposed by a patriarchal culture of the time. The villianous Aldo is especially fun, as he curses and plots world domination. I really enjoyed this book immensely and was sad to see it end. It was very easy to get swept up into Fogel's world of magic, love and strange machines that read your mind. A book to appeal to anyone interested in psychology or metaphysics, as well as just a good old fashioned romp! I highly recommend this book!
