Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Attractive, straightforward presentations of high-interest topics create appeal, especially for reluctant readers. Each spread includes one page of large-print text and a page of visuals, including sharp photos, drawings, and/or diagrams. "Tech Knowledge" sidebars further extend the information. The first title explains the development of aircraft carriers, how carriers are built, the types of aircraft found on them, and the various jobs involved in the operations. A layout diagram shows the different decks and facilities. Computers looks at a basic network, how the Internet is structured, and how data moves across the network through connections via the bandwidth and speed of a modem or DSL in bits and bytes. In Skyscrapers, every chapter covers one aspect of the development and construction of a building; the introduction begins with the Chicago fire in 1871 and addresses the new developments that allowed for taller buildings as the city was rebuilt. In the last title, readers learn who invented and first used telescopes, their development over time, how they collect light to focus, use mirrors, and continue to grow in size and power through the aid of other technologies. In all four titles, information is presented in a step-by-step, logical sequence, using simple, succinct language.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
