Most Helpful Customer Reviews
This was an interesting, well thought and written book on the various cults in our society. Martin describes the criteria that he used to distinguish a cult from mainstream religious, and based the ones he listed upon that. Each chapter was interesting and provided the belief system and how it compared with modern day Christianity and their beliefs. In the appendix, are a few religious, such as Seventh-day Adventist, that doesn't quite hit the cult status, but yet tiptoes on the edge. He gives his reasonings why and how they fit in his book from years prior. All in all, a very interesting read in learning about alternative religions, also known as cults. The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book or advanced reading copy.
The sixth edition of Walter Martin's "The Kingdom of the Cults" is the definitive reference for evangelical Christians who want to understand major cults--what they believe, and even how to approach ministry to them. While it is somewhat academic in nature, the book is still the best reference available today, very comprehensive in nature, treating the topic carefully and biblically and with sound research. Most importantly, the book begins by defining what a cult is and then proceeds to explain the psychological structure of cultism before it dives in to describing and evaluating specific beliefs of some cults by comparing them to the inspired Word of God, the Bible. Several cults are included in this edition, including Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science, Mormonism, Spiritism, the Baha'i Faith, Scientology, the Unification Church, and other religions. "The Kingdom of the Cults" also includes sections on the cults and world missions, the Jesus of the cults, and cult evangelism. This is the best book available on the topic of cults.
