I agree with the next review. Carla Kelly has written regency romances that are refreshingly different from the formulaic bodice-rippers that a lot of authors of this genre are currently churning out.

This was a very enjoyable read. I like how Carla Kelly strays from the typical character found in most novels.

Thanks for Not another story about rich and titled people. Very thoughtful handling of fictional characters surrounding the very real wars that were fought. Not too much about wars, just enough to carry the story. I look forward to more books by this author.

Was enjoying the writing and characters (though I'm quite certain Jane Austen was publishing anonymously and anyways how would Susan have afforded that book?) despite being wary from all the sexual tension. I stopped after they got married because there was a bedroom scene that might not have been erotic but was still pornographic. A shame because I wanted to read about Waterloo.

This novel by Carla Kelly is a not to be missed love story between Susan who comes from what some would call the "rigid" British raising of an upper class British girl and a man who knows little or nothing of his background or parentage. I'll most likely be buying Libby's Merchant next, which was recommended at the end of The Lady's Companion as another novel by Ms. Kelly.
