Overview

With troubles at home, thirteen-year-old Travis Wegner spends most of his time alone sneaking outdoors, where he seeks inner peace. But one day after a dark and stormy night, Travis meets a very unlikely companion. Sarora is a gryphon, with the head of a hawk, the body of a lioness, and the makings of a true friend.

As you may know, when you become a legendary animal's best friend, freaky things can happen. After touching a very powerful and magical gem, the Crystal of Courage, Travis's whole world turns upside down. A connection with the crystal gives Travis powers that not even Sarora can explain. Knowing that there is only one way to figure out his destiny, Sarora takes Travis on a wild journey to someone who has knowledge of all the magical powers and will teach him who he can become. Along the way, Travis faces many dangers and meets unlikely allies. But nothing could prepare him for this experience of a lifetime...a journey to meet the last Acer.

The Last Acer is the first book in a four book series, Spirit Hearts. During his journeys, Travis and his friends face difficult decisions, dangerous enemies, and the foreboding prophecy spoken about "one who is courageous, one who is just, and one who is wise...who will bring the darkness to its demise." However, with the evil titan, Lord Trazon, growing stronger each day, those aligned with Travis may find it impossible to win the war. Will Travis and team stand a chance at defeating the darkness and creating a land of peace?

I read The Last Acer a couple months ago and really enjoyed it. It must have been hard writing in a third person voice, but McKenzie made that happen. This book had a surprising ending and now I want to read the second one to find out what happens. I like books that do that. For just being sixteen and having a published book with more to come, that's pretty impressive. I hope to have that ability as well someday. McKenzie's dad and my mom work in the same office and that's how I got this book. The Last Acer is the first book I've read, and heard of, that was by a person that lives around my area. I would definately recommend this book to others.

Just finished "The Last Acer" by McKenzie Dempsey. I was blown away by her myriad characters with secret pasts and powers. I found the cliff-hanger ending to the 1st of a 4-part series very sophisticated for a 15 yr old author. Hard to believe this is her first attempt at writing. If you are drawn to the age-old battle between good and evil populated by humans, wizards and creatures drawn from fable and fantasy, you will find this a very enjoyable book. It would be a good gift for pre-teens, a good addtion to a youth library, a great discussion book for teachers and students, When young readers find out that the author is their age, it should inspire them to follow their dreams.

Wow! What an imagination. I know for a fact that many will find this a hard book to put down. No doubt they will be chomping at the bit for the next book in the series to hit the presses. I know I can't wait.
