Nineteen year old aspiring actress Jackie Bell is enjoying working as a Stage Manager in Dublin theatre until she discovers eminent producer Joshua Bird ("Birdie") stealing money in a dressing room. She is doubly shocked to find that the dashing leading man, Tony Cassells, may be Birdie's lover. Jackie convinces Tony that Birdie is a thief and the shamed producer does a runner. In bizarre circumstances, the talented Tony and Jackie are cast in lead roles in a contemporary version of Oklahoma by a dubious theatrical impresario. The show is a hit, and lands them parts in a suburban theatre in England where they embark on a torrid love affair, devastating Jackie's young Irish boyfriend. A bizarre love triangle and a tumultuous year follows, during which Jackie encounters sleazy producers and outrageous actors, and Birdie remains a menacing presence in the hedonistic theatre world of the l960's.
