As the U.S. Grows ever more tyrannical, Erin Gordon finds herself unwittingly declared an enemy of the state. Without friends or family, and unable to feed her child, she turns to her secretive, rough-hewn neighbors for help, and encounters a population apart: a separatist German-American community, rooted in kinship and ancient custom, descended from Saxon freemen once suppressed by Charlemagne - their traditions driven underground - over a thousand years ago.
Among them she learns of old ways kept alive; of commitments to self-reliance, self-determination, and the birthright of their freedom. But these people are more than a mere anachronism - they may hold the key to stopping tyranny itself.
