Overview

In the thrilling new novel of paranormal romance from New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards, serial killer expert Dr. Charlotte “Charlie” Stone may lose the one thing she never thinks she’ll miss: the dangerously sexy ghost who follows her wherever she goes.

THE LAST TIME I SAW HER

In this world, Dr. Charlotte Stone skillfully probes the minds of incarcerated serial killers to better understand what makes them tick and catch those who remain at large. But in the next world, Charlotte’s ghostly lover—executed killer Michael Garland—is facing death yet again: the ultimate annihilation of his soul, from which there is no return. Now, the only way Charlie can snatch Michael from the jaws of oblivion is by proving his innocence. And the dead man’s dead ringer may just be the key.

A mysterious stranger has turned up in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and Charlie is shocked to see that the man could be Michael Garland’s identical twin. But something tells her the resemblance is only skin deep—and behind the handsome face lurks the twisted mind of the real Southern Slasher, whose heinous crimes sent Michael to death row. Using all her keen profiling gifts, Charlie intends to draw the truth out of him, whoever he is.

Then a breakout at Wallens Ridge State Prison forces Charlie to contend with a sudden swarm of psychopaths bent on spilling blood. No one has a better chance of tracking down the deadly fugitives than Charlie—unless the rampaging killers manage to find her first and make this case her last. But Michael will move heaven and hell—and even make a devil’s bargain—for the chance to save Charlie’s life, and feel her touch once more . . . maybe for the final time.

Wow, wow, wow! How in the world Karen always manages to make these twists and turns and unimagineable happenings HAPPEN is just beyond my brain. While we all pulled for Michael to be vindicated because he is hot but also has a good heart l also feel very bad for Tony because he clearly is a good guy and also he just happens to be hot also. MAYBE he and Tam can forge some sort of relationship in the future. Anyway the wait was worth it for me and as always cannot wait for what delight comes next from this author. Over the years l have read everyone of her books.

This was a very satisfying ending to this series. This is the fourth book in the Dr. Charlotte Stone series. These books are part of a paranormal/romance/mystery/thriller series. Main character Dr. Charlotte Stone, studies serial killers a high security prison Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She is also able to see and talk to ghosts/spirits of those who have died a violent death. If you have not read the previous books in the series I do not want to ruin it for you at this point. Suffice it to say, that she ends up falling for one of her subjects who may have been wrongly accused. When he gets killed in front of her, his spirit sticks around and is in each of the subsequent books. When The Last Time I Saw Her starts, Charlie is in a bad way. At the end of the previous book the spirit of the man she loved gets sucked into what she calls, Spookyville. She does not think she will ever see him again and is grieving. When she meets a lawyer, who looks like Michael Garland’s twin, and is apparently looking for information on the "Southern Slasher Serial killer" she begins to suspect that perhaps he was the actual killer. While she is trying to obtain DNA while having coffee with him in her office, there is a prison break. Charlie, the lawyer and six young people brought to the prison for a "Scared Straight" program are all loaded onto a bus with six death row inmates, four of them serial killers who Charlie has studied. Charlie's first concern is to save the other hostages, as she knows what these men are capable of. Just when Charlie is about to be killed, Michael Garland shows up and is able to take over the body of his look alike while he is unconscious. The rest of the book is about catching the escaped convicts, saving the hostages and trying to figure out what is going to happen to Michael the next time he is sucked into Spookville. Once I got into the story, I could not put it down. I wanted to find out who was going to get caught and how, will the hostages survive and of course what is going to happen to Michael and Charlie. You need to like paranormal/supernatural stories to enjoy this book and series because it is out there. The characters of Charlie and Michael are very likeable. Their strong feelings toward one another are almost palpable. The character of Tam, Charlie's friend who is a psychic is not as well developed, but I would like to know more about her. She is so loyal that you would want her as a friend. There is a bit of a love triangle with FBI agent Tony Bartoli, but he realizes that he will never be more than a friend or family as Charlie explains to him. He does not see ghosts but does believe that Charlie does. The ending came as a complete surprise, yet in the vein of the series, I loved it. This was a great end to this series. I will say that there seemed to be a lot more sex in this book and it was described a bit more visually, but I read the other books a few years ago, so I might just have forgotten those parts. I definitely recommend this book and series to those who love a paranormal romance with a mystery/thriller storyline. An enjoyable read.

Heart stopping action, a gorgeous, sexy ghost, & a clean-cut FBI SAC of his serial killer catching team w/the help of forensic psychiatrist... What's not to like? It can be read as a stand alone but reading the series in order gives a depth to the characters & the dynamics of their relationships that is difficult to understand if you read it w/o the benefit of the previous books. I recommend this to readers who enjoy suspense romance w/a dash of paranormal for spice.

LOVED this! So glad I bought the series so I can read it again. That is how good they are. Hate the fact that others spoil it by their comments about it ending. HATE when people spoil it for others.

Michael is a ghost that was accused of murder and as Charlie is looking to clear his name, when she gets into trouble and he will do anything to save her. Great read loved the characters and so action packed I couldn’t put it down. Loved it!

Although i have loved this series, this particular book was disappointing because of.the repeptive use of words that Karen uses! I dont need to constantly read how Charlie feels about losing Michael. There were just too many filler words and phrases for me to enjoy this one. I think im done with this series!!

Anytime you settle down to read a book by Ms. Robards you must first prepare yourself to be taken on a literary thrill ride and then you must always expect the unexpected, because she is the master at pulling out the last minute surprise! She writes these stories that pull you in, invade your every thought and keep you on the edge of your seat...sometimes gasping for air! And I have to say this book was as equally amazing as all of her other books that I have read. This is the fourth installment in the Dr Charlotte Stone series, and with having not read the previous installments, I felt at times that I was missing out on some minor details, but it did not deter me from finishing the book, it was too engrossing not to! For that reason I would maybe recommend reading the series in order, I plan to go back and read the remaining three titles in the series. If you like thrilling mysteries with a splash of romance, you MUST check out Ms. Robards books, they are sure to satisfy all of your reading needs and then some!! I have always loved Ms Robards books and this one did not disappoint. It combined a thriller with paranormal elements which in anyone else’s hands would not be easy to do but Ms Robards succeeds flawlessly. When we open the book, our heart is breaking with Dr. Charlie Stone over the loss of her lover. Then the twists begin – serial killers, the afterlife, and more all combine to make this a thrilling, non-stop ride. I don’t want to spoil it so I won’t share the twists that begin right away but suffice it to say, the plot twists and turns on so many levels. There is the main plot of who is this mysterious man who looks like her dead lover? Will they stop the death row inmates on their break out and rampage with hostages? Will they clear her dead lover’s name? And how can there ever be a happy ending? Very well plotting and paced. You’re on the edge of your seat through the entire book with so many things happening, you can barely keep up. Excellent addition to the series and another top-notch thriller from Ms. Robards. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
