The Least of These by Martha Townley

In Martha Townley's uplifting saga, The Least of These, readers will find an instant companion in the novel's narrator, a gentle German shepherd named Jetta. Residing on the idyllic farm of Jeb and Nora Livingston, a couple who fosters neglected and abused Brittany Spaniels, Jetta is an integral part of the daily triumphs and losses that are inevitable in the world of animal rehabilitation. She acts as friend for those who have not yet encountered one and helps foster trust in the most unlikely of creatures.

Writing with the precision and detail of an expert, yet the finesse of a master storyteller, Martha Townley presents unforgettable characters who will ultimately live in the hearts of readers. These include Luke, a feisty spaniel who was forced to live within the confines of a small cage for years on end and meets Jetta with the utmost suspicion, and Hope, a spaniel who was shot in the face by her owner and whose progress is put in jeopardy by the return of the abusive man. Will these wounded creatures ever learn to trust or love again?

In a dramatic showdown, Jetta must ultimately prove just how far she is willing to go in order to keep her family and friends safe. An emotional tale of redemption among shelter dogs, The Least of These acts as the voice for all those creatures who do not have one, yet love their human companions more fiercely than words could ever express.

About the Author

Martha Townley currently works as a clinical social worker and is a longtime volunteer for the National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network (NBRAN). This organization provides foster care and rehabilitation for rescued dogs who have suffered abandonment, neglect, or abuse in the hope of adopting them into permanent homes. Her work as both a therapist and a NBRAN volunteer has provided Martha with a unique insight into the power of human-canine relationships. Her observations are reflected in the novel The Least of These, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to NBRAN to help defray the steep costs that rescue missions face.
