The Legacy Letters--his wife, his children, his final gift (5-Time National Award Winner) by Carew Papritz

This remarkable book will take you by the hand and lead you on a gentle and inspiring journey through the deepest thoughts and most tender emotions of a dying man during his final days.

The book consists of a series of letters written by its central character to his unborn children and estranged wife as he spends his waning hours alone in a remote cabin, contemplating life and love.

The subjects of his letters, which he has planned to be delivered to his twin children on their 10th birthday, vary from pragmatic fatherly advice to poetic musings on the meaning of life. The result is a practical, moral and spiritual guidebook that speaks to every reader: young and old, parent and child, lover and lonely one alike.

Using a series of letters to tell the main character's story is a brilliant mechanism that works particularly well in this scenario because of his compelling reason for writing the letters: a deep desire to be a father to the children he will never know and to redeem his lost love for his distanced wife.

As we read letter after letter we are allowed to see more and more clearly into the heart and soul of this man, whose approaching death is revealing to him, with more and more clarity, the beauty and preciousness of life. When the letters draw to a close we grieve with him over all that will be lost with his death and, at the same time, marvel with him at the sheer radiance of this gift of life:

"How utterly, utterly small we are under this magnificent star canopy. My God, what a sensation to be an atom in the scheme of such grandiosity. The allurement, the jazz, and the physics of it all. And how well love reigns under and over this convergence of infinity, all, and everything. My God, what wonders we must behold before we go. To be awakened. And so awake."

The Legacy Letters offers the reader an exquisite, intimate, passionate, humorous and genuine experience of the final days of one man's life. But ultimately it provides inspiration and guidance for living a deeply meaningful life -- every day -- for all the days of one's existence. Carew Papritz has used his considerable writing talent to pen a story that entertains and enlightens, intrigues and inspires, charms and catalyzes change for every reader.
Read The Legacy Letters aloud with your loved ones of any age and use the letters to stimulate conversations about your own life wisdom and all the lessons you have learned, big and small. Let it remind you of what you have always known but may have lost touch with in the hurriedness of daily life - the simple beauty of being awake in every moment, taking in everything that life has to offer. You will cherish every word of this book, just as it guides you to cherish every aspect of your beautiful, miraculous life.

I had originally ordered this book on my Kindle because my 8 year old son is friends with Mr. Papritz's son and told me I had to read it! My son loves that he knows an author and knows that I love to read so he was excited to tell me about it! To be honest, once I read the synopsis I couldn't wait to dive right in. I purchased it on my Kindle so I wouldn't have to wait for the book to come. I also have a hard back copy of the book and it is gorgeous! The premise of the book really hooked me from the start. Although this book isn't a hard read it took me a while to read. I would read a few letters and then have to reflect on what was written. I didn't want to rush through this book and miss anything. I loved all the letters but the one that really stuck with me is the letter from Papa to his son on becoming a man. I'm sure it has to do with the fact that I have two sons of my own and I'm trying hard to raise them to be good and honest men. These letters and life lessons were so well written and made me pause and slow things down a bit. In the world of hurrying and rushing, I want to savor these moments myself and with my children. I want them to really take in the world around them. I loved the imagery of Papa walking all around and just savoring the good in every season. I'm going to have to read the other letters now to find out more about Papa. This was a wonderfully written book...one that you won't be sorry to pick up. I have been recommending this book to many because it is so unique and not like any other book that I have read. Thank you Mr. Papritz for writing such a wonderful book!

This is a book filled with advice from a man that will never have a chance to meet his children.  A book filled with spiritual pourings from his heart.  A book filled with how to live, how to treat others, and how to connect with God. I sensed a deep regret and longing in his writings of the loss of his marriage and wife.  A man who has had to make peace with both losses. His straight forward words of wisdom makes him wise way beyond his years.  He has lived a life time in a short time. This is a book you don’t want to miss.  Tragic, sad, but yet happy and at peace.

Reviewed by Karen Pirnot for Readers' Favorite Every so often, there are books that grab you at the beginning and hold you spellbound to the finish. The Legacy Letters by Carew Papritz is such a novel. A man and a woman have a misunderstanding and the man goes his separate way, uninformed about the pregnancy of the woman, his wife. He finds out he has a fatal illness and elects to isolate himself in order to find some meaning to his life. He finds out about his wife's pregnancy and chooses to remain in isolation, trying to delineate what he wishes to pass down to his children. The wife and twin children have no idea what has happened to the man and they go about their lives until the twins' tenth birthday, when a letter arrives informing the wife that her husband is dead and there are letters left for the children to read. The Legacy Letters is a story of frustration, keenness of mind, and regrets common to everyday people. The soul-searching by the dying man is endearing and the reader learns gradually about a complex and learned man who chooses to face death alone rather than in the comfort of his family. Author Papritz skillfully crafts the letters so that they become the life of the man as a legacy to his twin children. He confesses he would rather live than die. He talks to his children about character and commitment, and how a marriage works and how a marriage dies. The language is folksy and believable and readers will relate to the feelings of the dying man. Love and appreciation of nature, as well as respect for humankind, leap from the pages so that each reader will ponder his or her own belief systems while wondering how anyone would choose to be alone at the moment of death. A powerful and poignant read for all.

What an interesting concept. To leave behind letters for inspiring your children to lead a better life.  Almost as a guidebook of "life lessons."  This book offers some lofty advice. Giving the reader something to ponder throughout, giving a chance for self-reflection. Life is short and we need to make the best of the time we have with one another. So, do what you love and share it with those who matter most.

I am so glad I got to read the Legacy Letters by Carew Papritz.  This is a book that everyone with a family must read as well as anyone in love. Life is so short and it’s easy to take things for granted.  Our children grow up so fast and I am so grateful to have read this book while my children are still growing up.  The Legacy Letters brings up the organic values of life that we have to teach our children through a wonderful and witty style.  Advice is dished out on just about every aspect of life. The book is written in letters to the main character’s wife.  The connection between the main character and his wife are heartwarming as well as thought provoking. I often just stopped while I was reading to reflect on my own feelings and how I do things. This book shows off the values that we should all teach our children.  If we all read this book, the world would be a better place.  I have no doubt. Mr. Papritz writes with an original down-home style that helped me and made me feel connected to the main character unlike any other book I have ever read.  By the end of the book, I genuinely wished I had known him. I felt emotionally connected through the happy times as well as the sad times in the book.       I am a person who knows the value of life and how much it needs to be cherished and not taken for granted. When I read the Legacy Letters, I never wanted it to end.   It’s an absolutely well written book that will take you to a better place in your heart and mind. Scott

The Huffington Post was right! This is a "MUST-READ book of wisdom for life!" The writing was powerful and timeless, tender and beautiful, which is a combination I've rarely come across in an inspirational book. At the same time, it is down to earth like reading a daily guidebook on how to live life. If you liked Tuesdays with Morrie or Chicken Soup for the Soul (which I both loved), you'll really take to The Legacy Letters! And I recently ordered the hardback version of the book which is just beautiful. Great book!!!

A man leaves his wife over something insignificant, finds out he is terminally ill, learns his wife is expecting twins, and to protect the pregnancy, decides to stay away and die alone.  He leaves behind letters for his twins, full of the wisdom he has gleaned from life and the observations he has made.  There are many thoughts to ponder in this book; I even turned down a couple of pages to reread.  By about 2/3 of the way through the book, I was, however, ready to reach the end. What started bothering me the most is that the writing started to appear as little more than how to use unique adjectives in abundance. I started focusing on the over-use of adjectives, and I would get so distracted, I couldn't remember what I'd read.  I think the idea of the book is good, and there are many nuggets of wisdom, but some of the writing style does get in the way after a while.
