About the Author

Rita Monette was born and raised in Southwest Louisiana. After retiring from her “real” job as an administrative assistant for the State of Michigan, Rita began doing what she always wanted to do…write, draw, and paint. Five long years later, Musa Publishing offered her a contract for her debut middle grade novel, The Legend of Ghost Dog Island, which also includes her artwork. Her stories are set in the beautiful, yet mysterious, bayous and swamps of her home state. Rita now lives with her husband, four lap dogs, and one lap cat, in the mountains of Tennessee.

If you are a fan of mystery novels similar to Trixie Belden or Nancy Drew, you will love this book. Rita Monette is a very gifted story-teller and her illustrations are beautiful. Her gift for capturing the essence of the Louisiana bayou and its Cajun people, adds a wonderful layer to this story. The characters are well-developed and the mystery is intriguing enough for adults. I felt for the lead character, Nikki Landry. Nikki is initially reluctant to make friends because her family has a history of moving. She does make friends, however, and hears of the legend of Ghost Dog Island. Nikki and her new friends decide to explore the island (because what kid wouldn’t?) and uncover pieces to a long ago mystery which may have started the legend. But when Nikki’s dog Snooper disappears, the legend becomes all too real for her. Nikki and her new friends are not only plunged into a mystery, but must find her dog before it's too late.

Reviewed for Readers Favorite by Michelle Stanley The Legend of Ghost Dog Island (Nikki Landry Swamp Legends) is an adventure for children by Rita Monette. Ten-year-old Nikki is sad because her father, a fisherman, has to move their houseboat to another town along the bayou where the crabbing is better. She meets Patti and Spike from the new school and hears the scary tale of a swamp creature that steals dogs’ spirits. Nikki finds an old bottle containing a cryptic poem and a key, and notices lights coming from Ghost Dog Island. She and her friends explore the island and Nikki finds an old journal that the key opens. When her dog Snooper disappears, Nikki believes the swamp monster has snatched him and goes to the island to search, but meets the ghost living there. Rita Monette’s Nikki Landry Swamp Legends is a terrific series for pre-teens who love adventure and mystery stories. The Legend of Ghost Dog Island is sure to delight readers with its heroine, Nikki Landry. She is a tomboy who dislikes wearing dresses, likes climbing trees, and sometimes lets her curiosity lead her into danger. If you like reading The Bobbsey Twins stories, then you will like the Nikki Landry Swamp Legends. This story is entertaining, lively, and is written from Rita Monette’s fond memories of the bayou while growing up in southwest Louisiana. She has included a glossary of Cajun French words, Author Notes on The Cajun People of Louisiana, and nicely drawn sketches. The book is fun to read and is highly recommended.

My kids (boy and girl) are 7 & 9. I usually read a few chapters to them each night at bedtime and we recently gave this one a try. It was great!!! I will admit that the author does a great job at letting chapters end on a spooky, oh no what's that!, part. So for older readers it will keep them going. For my 2, I often had to read the 1st page of next chapter to put their minds at ease before they could sleep. But that is part of the fun of reading to them...seeing them get invested in characters!!!
