The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales (Barnes & Noble Collectible Editions) by Washington Irving

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales collects the best macabre stories of Washington Irving. Blending sly humor with supernatural thrills, these tales are among the most beloved and re-read of all American fiction. In the thirteen stories gathered for this volume, Irving evokes the colorful landscapes of his Hudson Valley hometown, and conjures characters and creatures from its historical past for a unique kind of weird tale that speaks directly to America’s experience as a fledgling nation fashioning its own folk heritage. Selections include:
“Rip Van Winkle”—When henpecked Rip Van Winkle bowls ninepins with the strange little men of the Kaatskills, he has no idea how high the stakes of the game will be.
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”—The Headless Horseman who haunts the Hudson River Valley finds his perfect victim in Ichabod Crane, a man as gullibly superstitious as he is book-learned.
“The Adventure of the German Student”—How could the scholar know that the beautiful woman he rescued from the Reign of Terror was beyond saving in any mortal sense?
“The Devil and Tom Walker”—When the Devil steers Tom Walker to the treasure of Captain Kidd, the mean-spirited miser uses his ill-gotten gains to ruin many a fellow countryman before his soul comes up for forfeit.
“The Guests of Gibbet Island”—The tipsy pirate boldly offered to host his dead comrades at his home, never imagining that they actually would take him up on it.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales is one of Barnes & Noble's Collectible Editions classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed foil-stamped binding, with distinctive colored edging and an attractive ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of pleasure to readers young and old and are an indispensable cornerstone for any home library.

I was looking forward to adding Washington Irving's works to my library, but decided against this version because of the cover material. Instead of bonded-leather hardback this has the "flexi-format" cover, which feels like a rubber-coated paperback. Very disappointed... will continue to look elsewhere.

the flexiformat is smells of rubber, and the ink (or whatever it is) they use to write the letters and designs on the cover, which in this case is black, rubs off extremely easily! Seriously it reminds of those scratch off lottery cards! you can take your nail or even a pencil and if you rub on it gently, (thats what she said), the letters come right off! i had the picture of dorian gray flexibound (where the letters on the cover is gold) and the spine of the book is completely gold letters or designs because it has rubbed all off :/
