Interviews

An Interview with Spookley the Square Pumpkin

Q. Do you like being square?

A. At first I didn't, but now I love it! I didn't understand that being "different" is perfectly normal. We are all "different" -- that's what makes the world a fun place. Imagine if everyone looked and thought the same way...BORING!

Q. Why were the other pumpkins mean to you?

A. Because they had never seen a square pumpkin before, they thought all pumpkins should be round. So they judged me by the part of me they could see. But once they took the time to get to know me, they realized it's not what you look like that matters, it's who you are, and how you act that really counts. Now we're all friends!

Q. Did the farmer grow you special?

A. Nope. The farmer was as surprised as everyone else that one of the pumpkins he grew was square.

Q. What is you favorite color?

A. My favorite color is orange, because it means autumn is here, and that means Halloween is coming. I love Halloween. Don't you?

Q. Do you want to be round?

A. No. I'm very happy just being who I am.

Q. Do square pumpkins have square seeds?

A. As a matter of fact, it seems that a square pumpkin's seeds can be any shape: square, round, triangular, it doesn't seem to matter. I guess you can't judge a seed by its cover either.

Q. Was it fun to be a hero?

A. I don't really think of myself as a hero, but it was great to be able to help the other pumpkins.

Q. Why do you think you grew square?

A. That's a tough one... Maybe so the other pumpkins could learn a few lessons, like...

  • Never be embarrassed of who you are.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Give a new kid a chance.
  • Don't judge people by their looks.
  • Always expect the unexpected.
  • And most important of all...to show everyone it really is hip to be square!
Q. How does it feel to have a book written about you?

A. It's a little embarrassing, but it does give me a chance to meet all sorts of interesting people and make a lot of new friends, so I guess I'm really glad it happened.

Q. Do you have anything you want to say to your new friends?

A. I hope you all like the book, and remember when you go out trick or treating...

  • Carry a flashlight.
  • Walk, don't run.
  • Stay on sidewalks.
  • Obey traffic signals.
  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods.
  • Make sure your costume doesn't drag on the ground.
  • Only go to houses that are lit.
  • And most important of all...have fun!
Happy Halloween, Everybody!

This is a story about a pumpkin named Spookley, that was not shaped like the other pumpkins in the patch. The other pumpkins made fun of him for being different until he saved them. After he became the hero of the pumpkin patch the farmer decided to grow a whole patch just like Spookley. The new patch of different shaped pumpkins were a hit with the buyers. This was a gift from my sister for my oldest son when he was younger. This came in handy because my son was starting a new school and wasn't sure if everyone would like him. After reading this to him, he felt better about himself and realized that it was okay to be different. Also, he learned that it was not nice to make fun of other people.I would use as an extension during the month of October for a fall theme and Halloween theme. The cd that came with the book tells the story in kind of a spooky voice and the two songs are Halloween themed, like the Transylvania Twist. I would also use this to teach shapes and have the children do pumpkin art.

This book is a good example of a fantasy book. It gives pumkins human characteristics. It does not decieve, but it tells the truths that children cannot understand unless in an imaginary story. The theme of this book is being different can be a good thing. This is a very important lesson for students to learn, and this is a good way for them to learn it. It is very applicable to their lives. I would use this book for primary students. The type of media used is mixed media, some water colors, some pen, and some acrylic.

We bought the book four our first grade class. We used it to learn the beginning, middle and end. Some students said " I like it becasue it gives a lot of details." "I like it becasue I like pumpkins." I like it because it gave us details about round pumpkins teasing him." The stpry is about a square pumpkin who gets teased becasue he is different. Then he ends up saving the day. It has a great lesson about not judging by the way something or someone looks. We would recommend this story to kids of all ages. It is a sweet story.

When my son was 2 he and I visited one of my sisters who had this book. He would not stop asking me to read it, so naturally I had to get him his own copy. This is one of his favorite books! It's a good moral and fun to read!

I got this for my 2 granddaughters, ages 1 1/2 and 3 1/2. They both love the book. The illustrations are colorful and eye-catching. The story is very cute. The message of not judging because of being different is illustrated through the story. Both my girls sit to listen to the whole story and frequently bring the book out to be read again.

I bought this book for my two-year-old at Halloween, and she loves it so much we're still reading it EVERY night at bed time - she asks for it by name. The pictures are adorable. There are a couple spots where the author's word choice trips up the rythm, but we improvise. ;) We also got the little stuffed Spookley toy... honestly haven't listened to the CD though.

I fell in love with this book long before I had my own children. I admit I jumped the gun and bought it for my 2 1/2 year old. I think it is a bit much for her to absorb. But she did get a kick out of the colors and shapes of all the pumpkins. I am sure she will grow to love it as I have.

This book is such a great learning tool for kids. The Connecticut chapter of Operation Respect has really embraced its story of diversity and tolerance. If you like the story you have to check out the new movie version that just came out. Barnes and Noble sells it at the stores.

I bought this book for my grandson, (who at the time was 3). From the day I bought it and sometime past Thanksgiving we read this book (and listened) everyday. He enjoyed Spookley so much, that I cut out a piece of wood and painted it up to look just like Spookley. He was happy to have his very own Spookley hanging in his room. When Fall arrives again this year, you can bet we'll be listening and reading Spookley again. Nanny B-Largo,FL

My first-graders LOVED this story. And it has such a good plot. The CD is great and they also enjoyed passing around the Spookley doll.

Thank you for this wonderful book. Instead of pretending we are all the same, it highlights the differences in people and then teaches readers of all ages to apprecaite and celebrate those differences. This is such a great time to be doing that in this country. I want to give it to everyone I know!

A wonderful story that everyone can enjoy; from the smallest children to the most rebellious of teenagers.. Spookley is an amazing character who shows that one can make a difference even if they are different! I hope that everyone experiences Spookley this holiday season and year round!

What a sweet story! I love Spookley! When is the TV show coming out? Great message for kids of all ages - loved the rhymes. As the saying goes, 'don't judge a book by its cover.' Great to use during Brotherhood Week (February) in addition to Halloween.

I found this to be a charming story for children. The strange little square pumpkin saves the day and begins a new day of acceptance on the farm...and in the hearts of the children who hear his story!
