The Legend Of The Mighty, Mighty Wendellby Melissa S. Harris
In The Legend of The Mighty, Mighty Wendell Maddie performs her nightly routine on why bedtime should be extended. Unhinged by Maddie's song and dance, her mother gingerly helps with the magical tale of the mighty Wendell that can do the impossible. He can inspire, even give "wings and the ability to fly." The characters are familiar faces from our everyday lives. They illustrate the power of family and show gratitude towards the sometimes-forgotten father in the African-American community.

“The Legend of the Mighty, Mighty Wendell” is a picture book that welcomes the reader into a child’s epic view of their father. The story gives the audience a first-hand account of how quality time with a child can inspire them to infinite possibilities. While being a tribute to fathers, Melissa forces us (fathers) to be accountable. The author is amazing. She is a phenomenal story teller, writer, and visionary that connects well with the illustrator to activate her characters. The cover is aweing with images that spring from the page and flow from cover to cover. Melissa’s work is a breath of fresh air in a world that tends to forget the importance of a great male figure in a child’s life and most importantly the great portrayal of a Dad in the African American community. Melissa, thank you. We look forward to opening the covers to plunge into the exciting journeys of your future works.
This book was a welcomed addition to my family's library. I thank the author for celebrating the dedication of great African-American fathers everywhere. The illustrations were vibrant, and I think children will be excited to read this book over and over again.
