Overview

Lydia and Julie have been through many adventures as they navigated junior high, popularity, families, and friendship. In the final adventure in the series, the peaceful world of Hamlin Junior High is rocked when Lydia and Julie learn that they’re going to have to play host to new students whose school burned down. The outside threat bands the Hamlin kids together against a common enemy—for a while. When the enemy gets their hands on Lydia and Julie’s notebook, no one wants anything to do with the girls. It’s the biggest threat to their friendship (and a pretty definitive failure of their quest for popularity), and it can only be solved one way. Two words: dance battle.

Editorial Reviews

Booklist - Abby Nolan

"Ignatow keeps the narrative lively, even as the girls work through embarrassment and sorrow. A fitting finale that suggests the duo will, in fact, survive eighth grade and beyond."
Children's Literature - Chelsea Couillard-Smith
In the seventh and final installment of the “Popularity Papers” series, Lydia and Julie are nearing the end of seventh grade, and are still immersed in writing and drawing their joint journal. When a fire forces Hamlin Junior High to take in the students and staff of Adams Junior High, Julie and Lydia find themselves in the middle of a hostile environment. Suddenly the hallways are impassable, demerits are handed down for minor rule infractions, and a locker-sharing system is creating some uncomfortable—and smelly—situations. When Julie’s even-keeled boyfriend is suspended for fighting with an Adams student, Julie and Lydia decide they have to do something to bring the school together. But just as their efforts to turn the spring dance into a unity celebration take off, their journal disappears and pages appear on the school walls - excerpts chosen especially to damage their reputation. Will they be able to weather the drama and bring peace to the school? Ignatow’s diary-style novel is heavily illustrated with expressive, colorful cartoon drawings in colored pencil and marker, giving the art a juvenile yet polished look. The handwritten text alternates between Lydia’s child-like cursive and Julie’s bold print, and plenty of humor in both the narrative and the droll illustrations keeps the tone light. Ignatow demonstrates a keen understanding of the middle school years, the time when kids are happy to have homemade waffle breakfasts and loving care during sick days but can think of nothing more humiliating than having their parents chaperone the school dance. In a world of Diary of a Wimpy Kid knock-offs, Ignatow elevates her series above the rest of the pack with a diverse cast of realistic, relatable characters, plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, and a tone of hopeful optimism that with the right friend by your side, even middle school can be conquered. Reviewer: Chelsea Couillard-Smith; Ages 9 to 12.
