Overview

The author of The Future of the Body and the author of Mastery team up to present a proven method for reaching the next stage of human development.

Can people with the time-and energy-consuming concerns of job and family find a way to transform their lives through a regular, long-term program of body/mind/spirit development? Is it possible, through conscious choice, to participate in the next step of human evolution? Two of the most distinguished theorists and teachers of human transformation believe the answer to these questions is yes.

In this inspiring and practical book, George Leonard and Michael Murphy offer a comprehensive program of Integral Transformative Practice (ITP) based on a two-year experimental class that grew out of their lifework. Drawing upon some seventy years of combined experience in the study of human potential, along with the significant findings of their recent experiment, they present step-by-step instructions for joining body, mind, heart, and soul in an evolutionary adventure that has powerful personal and social implications.

Their message will be especially refreshing to those who have become disillusioned by promises of immediate gratification, instant learning, and effortless enlightenment. This book shows the way to profound and lasting transformation through long-term practice. It celebrates the day-by-day joys of the path while opening fresh vistas to human futures.

The authors have been leaders in the human potential area for many years: Michael Murphy is the founder of the Esalen Institute, and George Leonard is author of a number of books. In this collaborative work, they present an overview of a course they developed at Esalen, described as an exploration of the twelve aspects of human functioning outlined in Murphy's book 'The Future of the Body...' In the introduction to this book, they write, 'Every person on this planet can join in the process of transformative practice that began with our ancient ancestors.' Chapters include specific instruction in various forms of affirmation, Katz (a series of body movements), mental imaging, meditation and other structured practices, and the authors note 'many fine practices, many paths exist... Many, many activities can be considered practice. Even something as commonplace as gardening can be a practice if done for the sheer love of it, as an expression of the gardener's soul.' The authors obviously have a commitment to helping advance, as they say, 'the realization of every citizen's positive potential... inherent in every aspect of our lives, from the most common to the most extraordinary.'

This book is one of the most enlightening books I have ever read! It is a tremendous help for people who are ready and willing to make the painful but exhilarating transformation from a caterpillar travelling on two-dimensional land to a butterfly travelling in three-dimensional space. The type of growth discussed in this book involves a transformation of consciousness (perhaps we can call it spiritual growth). It explains what it truly means to grow and describes how the process works and what we can do to involve ourselves in the process. It is no quick fix and it may not make much sense to those of us who are not ready for it but it is a true gift for those of us who are. Another excellent book on this topic is, 'The Ever-Transcending Spirit' by Toru Sato. It speaks to a wider audience and explains these things so clearly that it is pure joy to read. I am sure that all readers will enjoy these books when the time is right.

This is a fantastic book. If you are ready for true spiritual and emotional transformation, this is the book for you. It will help take you to the next level in your spiritual and emotional development. Another good book on this topic is Rhythm, Relationships, and Transcendence by Toru Sato. It is also a wonderful book that will guide you through your journey of life!
