This anthology of fantastic fiction and science fiction gathers 80 short stories written in English between 1806 and 1992 by women writers ranging from Mary Shelley and Louisa May Alcott to Margaret Atwood and Ann Oakley. The works of writers from Australia, Canada, Denmark, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and, primarily, Britain and the United States are arranged chronologically and are accompanied by brief biographical notes. An introduction by Williams (English, Univ. of London) discusses the history of fantastic fiction and women writers of fantasy and science fiction but fails to define clearly the differences between these terms and genres. While many anthologies of science fiction and fantastic fiction exist, this one stands apart from others both because of its historical scope and its focus on women. Recommended as a convenient resource for women's studies, fantastic/science fic tion, and most large literature collec tions.-- Ellen Finnie Duranceau, MIT Lib.
