The tides of war have turned for the valiant Scots led by King Robert the Bruce, and they boldly reclaim lands still ruled by the English. When Jamie Graham comes to seize Hamstead Heath, he has no need for a hostage--not even one as beautiful and spirited as Christina, the manor's chatelaine. Yet she insists that he abduct her. Though he is certain this confounding woman is trying to play him for a fool, Jamie is determined to claim the sweet temptation she offers...

Christina has but one goal--to free her brother from the fortress of the new English king who has accused her family of treason. Her growing love for her unwilling captor is both unexpected and thrilling, yet it must not deter her from her mission--to master the art of jousting, win a tournament in disguise, and secure her brother's release. She cannot foresee the twist of fate that will threaten all she holds dear: her life, her lands...and the man who has captured her heart.

This was my first time reading a book in the Graham Clan series though the author set it up in a way that I could follow along easily without feeling that I'm missing a lot by not starting from the beginning. This story takes place in the time of Robert the Bruce when he was a force not to be messed with and many of the English were paying tribute to him. Christina is an Englishwoman who is desperate to find a way to get her brother back, including trying to drug a group of Bruce's men, who is a guest of one of King Edward II's cronies but isn't allowed to leave where he's at so essentially he's a prisoner. When one of Bruce's men known as Jamie Graham comes to collect a tribute from Christina's manor, he and his men almost find themselves in hot water but find a way around the mess they've landed in. After Christina realizes that it backfired, she begs Jamie to take her with as a prisoner as well as her soon to be sister in law and steward because she fears that King Edward will attack her manor otherwise. Jamie is very reluctant but eventually agrees and finds himself equal parts fascinated and frustrated with the feisty Christina. As they travel back to Jamie's home, Christina slowly finds herself falling for the frustrating Jamie though does her best to resist and tries not to let her temper get the the upper hand. She's certainly in over her head but isn't afraid to speak her mind despite thinking at times she may have been better off staying at home. It was a pleasure to read this book though I did want to knock some sense into Jamie at times for being so stubborn and thinking he knows what's best in all situations. Christina was no wilting flower and not afraid to protect those that she cares for. It was interesting to see these two unlikely people slowly come together and I'm curious what the future holds for them. This book was a great mixture of adventure, Scottish highlanders and the power of love. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

Enjoyable historical romance. Jamie Graham has come to seize Hamstead Heath and is surprised when Christina, the manor’s chatelaine demands she be held hostage and ransomed. Christina only focus is to rescue her brother and will do anything to do it, even being taken hostage. I liked the characters and the historical information and the story flowed seamlessly. I really liked it.
