About the Author

My Ph.D. is from The University of California, Berkeley. The U.S. News and World Report rated it as the best publicly-funded university and fourth best overall in the entire world.
I served on the faculties of UCLA and Carnegie-Mellon and was a research fellow at the world’s oldest Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium. I’ve spoken at Yale, The University of Chicago, and Harvard Law School.
I’ve published about 250 articles and 16 books. My books have been translated into 8 foreign languages.
I’ve consulted in over 20 countries for the world’s largest multi-nationals. Their 2019 revenues exceeded 20 trillion dollars, about 10% of America’s GDP.
Because I’m not an MD, some people who want the lockdown to continue will insist that my opinion is irrelevant. Let’s relate that criticism to history.
Clemenceau, the Prime Minister of France during World War I, once said, “War is too important to be left to the generals.” He meant that generals concentrate on military issues and ignore the destructive social consequences of their decisions.
That principle certainly applies to the lockdown and depression. Decisions which severely damage the world economy are too important to be left to the doctors.
They focus on their narrow specialty: treating sick people. Most of them rarely think about economic issues. I was delighted to learn that Dr. Jay Bhattacharya is a professor at Stanford Medical School. He has an MD and a Ph.D. in economics, and his remarks quoted earlier had the proper balance between medical and economic issues.
When I was a young professor at Carnegie-Mellon, my colleague, Herbert Simon, was laying the foundation for what is now called “Behavioral Economics.” He later received The Nobel Prize in Economics.
Perhaps his most important contribution was to challenge the belief that people are rational decision-makers who examine all their alternatives and select the best one. If he were alive today, he would probably regard many recent decisions as being extremely short-sighted and destructive.
