The Lonely Grave - How a Homestead Murder in South Dakota Brought Closure 100 Years Later
A brutal murder.
A community shocked.
A suspect proclaiming his innocence.
To the homesteaders who settled the untamed land of Dakota Territory, what affected one of them affected all of them. And the motive shook them to their core.

As the years slipped into decades and then into a new century, new questions arose, spurred by the unusual placement of a grave on the outskirts of the cemetery. Who was Sarah Kelley and why was she buried so far away from the others?

So far away and so lonely.

An investigation by the author opened the doors that led to the answers to multiple questions that family members and the community had been asking for years.

The true story of an old murder that still makes people gasp and the continuing compassion of a community that never stopped caring.

The book also examines the modern relevance of a century old murder and examines the conditions and stresses that led to violence in the homestead days.

About the Author

Sue Speck covered many big city crimes in her career as television reporter, but it was an old murder case in a tiny country cemetery that proved equally as compelling.

She heard about the murder case when she was growing up because her father was born and raised several miles from where it happened. When she moved back home for several years to help her elderly parents, she asked her dad about it. While he only knew what he'd heard while he was growing up, the 92-year-old gentleman guided her to the answers. As it turned out, the answers were hidden in the remote cemetery where they'd been visiting the graves of family members for decades.

Sue was a television reporter in Houston, Texas and worked as a writer and editor at an international news service. Major cases and trials that Sue Speck covered include the Clara Harris murder trial, the Andrea Yates multiple murder trial, and the rail car killer trial.
